The girls were more successful than the boys in their attempts this weekend to qualify for the under 12 finals , which is just as well as their finals are being held in Sheffield in 2 weeks time.
The team of Ali Collins, Maria Budin and Donia Abdel-Aziz dismissed Bulgaria and Romania without losing a set, but were beaten 3-0 by Slovenia in the match to decide seedings. The under 14s and under 16s play next weekend.
Neither the under 14s nor under 16s will join the under 12s in the finals. The under 16s were not expected to progress. The team of Anna Brogan, Millie Streeton and Sabrina Federici were pitted against top qualifying seed Ukraine, and despite a win from Anna in the battle of the number 1s lost out 2-1. They thumped Greece 3-0 in the consolation draw though.
More disappointing though was the under 14s, who fielded their strongest trio (Maia Lumsden, Gabriella Taylor and Jazzi Plews). Despite being top seeds, after cruising past Bulgaria, they failed to win a set against the host nation (Czech Republic)
The original team selection was Brogan, Christie and Rush. I don't know the reasons for withdrawal, though Freya hasn't played since retiring in Sweden last month.
The under 14s beat Germany 3-0 to finish 3rd in their group, while the under 16s lost 2-1 to Poland, finishing 6th
The under 12s played the Czech Republic today in the finals, but despite a 3 hour plus battle between Ali Collins and the Czech no. 1, ended up losing 3-0 so will have to play for the minor places.
Slovakia got some consolation this weekend by beating us 2-1, but the girls finished on a winning note with a 2-1 win against Belarus (Ali Collins & the doubles pair of Ali and Donia gaining the wins) so end up in 7th place
Showing the vagaries of allocation of teams in this tournament the Czech Republic, after knocking us out, went on to win the under 14 title, despite not being seeded to even reach the final 8
