I've been alerted indirectly by Steven that Jay Clarke and Sam Ferguson are contesting a Category 1 final in Romania tomorrow at 10am BST, and there should be a live stream. Jay is ranked 6 and Sam 11 in the TE14 list currently. Sam had a good win over the Swedish second seed in the semis by 7-5 in the third
The final is underway after a delay, with live stream on the above link (or you can click the link near the top for live scores). Sam is the left-hander with blue top. Jay the right-hander with white top leads 3-1* having broken in the opening game
It would be good if we didn't cut to interviews with Romanian players every two seconds
At least the early interviews appeared to be brief, and the match was easily visible in the background, but the latest interview with Dulgheru has taken place annoyingly at the business end of the first set with no view of the tennis.
Jay served for the set twice but was broken back easily, and Sam ran away with the tiebreak 7-3
Jay went 5-1 up in the final set, but was pegged back to 5-4, before serving out for the title. Both have just been presented with trophies - Jay will move into the top 5, and Sam into the top 10. A comparable scenario to 3 years ago when Luke Bambridge and Evan Hoyt spearheaded the GB team to win the U14 Winter Cup with similar rankings
Yes, I didn't watch much of it, but Jay seemed to be happy playing from well behind the baseline, whilst Sam was more prepared to take some balls earlier, from in or just on the baseline.
Jay backed up his title with another Grade 1 success last week, meaning he has shot to the top of the Tennis Europe U14 rankings. Maia Lumsden and Gabriella Patricia Taylor have both made it through to the semis of a Grade 1 event this week in the Czech Republic. Up next for Maia is the useful Russian Aleksandra Pospelova
Good news from the Czech Republic as both girls won their semis in straight sets to ensure a British winner of a top graded TE14 event for the third week running.
The 'more than useful' Maia celebrated her second tournament win in a month at different levels, winning in 3 sets (3-6 6-4 6-4) It must be tricky swapping around between TE14, ITF juniors and Pro events, as she has this last month, but she seems to be able to adjust well. She's on the list for another Category 1 event next week, but I guess that under 14 events will take a back seat after that.
Anastasia Mikheeva has followed up her run in the Edinburgh ITF event by reaching the final of a Tennis Europe Category 1 event - the Windmill Cup, which attracts a number of strong players from overseas. She plays top seed Anna Kalinskaya (Russia) in tomorrow's final
Anastasia was unable to prevent the Russian from winning the tournament without dropping a set (the final was 6-1 6-3) but she should join Maia and Gabi in the top 10 in the race to the Masters - it's been rare in recent years to find one girl in the top 10 at any stage, never mind 3
