Andy's schedule - confirmations and more news

From the Telegraph:

It may be only a few days into Andy Murray's off-season, but thoughts have already turned to his schedule for the first months of next year, with his advisers disclosing yesterday that the Scottish teenager is planning to play two events before the Australian Open and will almost certainly skip February's European indoor season.

The 18-year-old will be playing his first full season on the main tour next year, and his schedule has been the subject of some debate, especially as his achievements this season have meant that he is now in high demand from the sport's power-brokers and money-men. Tournament directors the world over want Murray's name on their draw-sheets, and, perhaps more importantly, his face on their posters and on their fliers.

Murray confirmed that he will meet Amir Khan in a Manchester gym tomorrow, hoping to acquire some fitness tips from the 18-year-old boxer. A boxing enthusiast, Murray was at ringside in Glasgow last Saturday night for Khan's fight, and the two have formed a close bond.

Murray is scheduled to open his year by appearing at the hard-court tournament in Adelaide in the first week of January and the week after he is set to play on the same surface at an event in Auckland in New Zealand. The Australian Open then follows immediately afterwards. He has earned direct entry into the grand slam event played on hard courts having broken into the world's top 100.

The current thinking is that Murray will not play the European indoor season during February and will instead opt for the hard-court tournaments in the United States, in Delray Beach in Florida, San Jose, and Memphis. By arriving early in the United States, Murray is hoping to be better prepared for the two Masters Series tournaments in March, the first in Indian Wells in the Californian desert and the second in Miami.

Somebody has just posted the following on MTF.  I don't know how accurate it is, but it is interesting:

"according to Judy and Petch, this is Andy's offical schedule from New Year to Wimbers.

Adelaide (a possibility...the rest are definite, injury aside...)
Auckland
Aussie Open
San Jose
Memphis
Scottsdale
Indian Wells
Miami
Davis Cup
Monte Carlo
Barcelona
Rome
Hamburg
Roland Garros
Queens
Wimbledon"

I was hoping he would play Nottingham, maybe if he were to lose early at Queens he would.

I can't believe that the list provided is Andy's complete schedule up to Wimbledon. The bit up to Miami is right and has been confirmed but Andy's team has said that they are only planning the 1st 3 months of 2006 now, so the events from April-June are not accurate. I think it's likely that Andy will be persuaded to play Nottingham - he'll want plenty of practise of grass and he won't get many chances to play in front of British fans.

That would keep Andrew happy..... and maybe me too, if I don't get Wimbledon tickets, as my daughter lives in Nottingham and I could maybe swing a couple of days there.

Well, I certainly lived in Newcastle before you did, and my daughter has lived in Nottingham since 2001 - who is stalking whom?

The list is almost certainly right with one obvious exception and that is that the Scottsdale event has moved to Las Vegas.

Since we know already that Andy is scheduled to play Adelaide and Auckland prior to the Australian Open, and has committed to San Jose, a quick look at the ATP Calendar, tells you that he is bound to play Memphis and Las Vegas - no point in flying back and forth across the ocean - then the Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami.

After that most of the tournaments are the clay court masters events, Barcelona due to the Sanchez-Casal academy, and Queens to get some practice on the grass prior to Wimbledon.

In many respects the timing of the spring Masters events dictates a player's schedule. As for Nottingham I doubt it will happen unless Andy gets knocked out of Roland Garros at an early stage. He will need plenty of rest prior to Wimbledon given the emotionally draining experience that will be with all the expectations and hype surrounding his appearance.

After Wimbledon he is likely to take a long break to recharge before the North American summer hardcourt events. This year he played straight through from Queens to the US Open but such a schedule will not be viable given a tough spring.

It is interesting that despite all the talk from Mark Petchey about preparing Andy for a long career, what they actually do looks far more like getting him ready to compete for Grand Slam events in the near future.

If anything, Andy appears to be a player whose best tennis will be played aged 20-25 and their actions seem to support such a view.

I hadn't thought of that. That is weird isn't it Tim. Maybe Andy's flying out to SA to train until the Aberdeen Cup, then flying back to Scotland for the week before the event and then the next week flying back to SA to complete his training

And as I asked somewhere on another thread, is it South Africa or Australia?  I have heard both.  Maybe a spell in SA and a month in Oz after the Aberdeen Cup?  That would get him well acclimatised for the NZ/Oz tournaments!
