Week 44 - ATP 500 - Basel (indoor hard)

As Andy's playing this tourney next week, I thought it appropriate to start a thread. He's in with Djokers and Fed, so hope he doesn't burn out for Paris and London.

Edited: but only to get the thread title into the more standard format

Im not sure that this is the best option after his strike threat!

Hmm yes,  Andy does seem to finding the energy to play rather a lot of tournaments towards the end of the year and not all necessary.

Ok, I guess was up for another zero pointer if didn't play a 4th "500" for the year but I am sure he could of coped.

Hope he's not getting carried away with this target to be ye no 3 because it's looking very good anyway with all the points Fed still has to come off ( he's got to defend his Basel title just to keep where he is next week ) .

And as said elsewhere if he was going to play a 500, Valencia maybe seemed the better bet.

I keep hearing that the Valencia surface is nothing like the surface for Paris and WTF: whereas Basel apparently is. That might have a lot to do with his choice. Valencia would certainly have been a much easier option pointswise, so I don't think we can accuse Andy of chasing points next week.

I have given Andy quite a bit of stick over his complaints but in all fairness there ws no strike threat. The media blew his comments completely out of proportion.

Anyway, what a great line up for an ATP 500 with 5 of the top 8 playing here. Must be one of the strongest fields ever outside of a grand slam / masters series.

Andy's match is scheduled for not before 3pm GMT tomorrow on the Centre Court; the doubles is 4th match on Court 2, with play starting at noon GMT. I can foresee a possible clash there. . . all it needs is some quick matches/retirements etc in the first 3. . .

First match on court two lasted nearly 3 hours so I don't think their will be a problem.

In other news the seeded players are having a nightmare. Fish (retirement), Berdych, Troicki and Tipsarevic (retirement) have all lost in the first round.

But - Andy has withdrawn with a leg injury! Right gluteal strain. I suppose he will be out of the doubles too.

His place has been taken by Chiudinelli. Didn't Andy sort of pinch the wild card which had been promised to Chiudinelli? If so, I'm glad he got the place.

I can't help giggling that Sky were set to cover Valencia, dashed off to Basel instead when Andy got the wild card, and now he isn't playing. . . it almost makes up for my disappointment at his injury. I hope it is fairly minor and he will be ok for Paris and WTF.

At the moment he is still down on the doubles draw and on the Programme for playing later today.
