Girls: Osaka Mayor's Cup - World Super Junior Tennis Championships, Japan - Grade A (Week 42)

Our two entrants have avoided seeds, but face local players who often fare better than their rankings would suggest here.

R1 (L64)

Mayu Sato (JPN) v Verena Jane Scott (GBR)

Yukino Emi (JPN) v Katy Dunne (GBR)

Just Katy avoiding the banana skin of underranked locals (unlike the top seed Ellen Allgurin). She plays one of the lower seeds next, who has had a mixed year, but did beat Eleanor Dean in the summer. Katy teams up in doubles with Australian Brooke Rischbieth, who was part of the team which won the Junior Fed Cup, and is particularly strong in doubles, winning 5 titles this year.

R1 (L64)

Mayu Sato (JPN) d. Verena Jane Scott (GBR) 6-3 7-5
Katy Dunne (GBR) d. Yukino Emi (JPN) 6-1 7-6(3)

R2

(14) Elke Lemmens (BEL) v Katy Dunne (GBR)

A good win for Katy, but she will need an even better one to progress further against the finalist in both the China Grade 2s recently

R3

Katy Dunne (GBR) v (4) Anna Tyulpa (RUS)

Very good looking win for Katy, which will pretty certainly take her into the junior top 100 for the first time.

QF :  Katy Dunne (GBR)  vs  (12) Zuzanna Maciejewska (POL)

Ah, the polish giant Zuzanna next. She's almost as tall as Sharapova.

Chop her down, Katy.

Excellent win, and hopefully a watershed moment in her career with her first top 50 win. Looks like she'll need a stepladder for tomorrow's handshakebiggrin - the Pole really towers above her coach. Mind you she's not the first Polish female six-footer. I remember Magdalena Grzybowska in the late 1990s was almost as tall.

The Pole beat Eleanor earlier in the year, and Katy was unable to stop her either - but a very good week nevertheless. Will need more points this year to stay in the top 100 though.

QF : (12) Zuzanna Maciejewska (POL) d. Katy Dunne (GBR) 6-1 7-6(5)

A good run never the less. A QF appearance here is Katy's biggest single tournament points haul and she should be ranked around 90 as a result.
