And Funky Flo dispatches Rafa 7-6 6-3. I had to dash out straight after Andy's match, and only saw the last few games of this, but according to the commentators Mayer played exceptionally well.
Andy's next opponent - qualifier Mathew Ebden of Australia, who beat Gilles Simon 6-2 2-6 7-6. That's a turnup for the books! Ebden is 23 years old and has sprung up out of nowhere - he was playing Futures and Challengers this time last year. Currently at a career-high ranking of #124, he shouldn't trouble Muzza too much - but then, he shouldn't have troubled Simon either. . .
Perhaps a questions for Steven, what is Andy's highest ever points total?
(Apologies if this was already asked on another thread!)
His points peaked at 9700 when he was WR 3 in July 2009 just after his 2008 Indianapolis (at least, I think it was Indianapolis) zero-pointer expired and he was finally able to count his first Queen's win from the month before.
He rose to WR 2 with 9250 points after winning Montréal 2009 a few weeks later and stayed there for 2 more weeks with 9610 points.
When looking at 2009 points, you need to bear in mind that they were slightly inflated because end of 2008 points were still counting double but in 2009, you didn't get twice as many points for matching the previous year's round in most tournaments unless you actually retained a title. (e.g. a 2008 slam runner-up got 700 points doubled to 1400 at the end of 2008 but only got 1200 points if they reached the Final again)
Having said that, since the rankings changed at the end of 2008, the world no. 1 has nearly always had well over 10000 points - the lowest number of points that has been enough for no. 1 since then was 8700, when Rafa took over from Fed for the second time after RG 2010.

GB on a shirt, Davis Cup still gleaming, 79 years of hurt, never stopped us dreaming ... 29/11/2015 that dream came true!
Just needs to win Shanghai, Paris and the WTF at the O2 ( without losing a match ) and Andy will reach 9700 again ( and as Steven suggests this would really be a better 9700 )
Win the Australian Open to crack the 10000
Then clean up the American spring hardcourt Masters that he missed out in earlier this year...
