Week 40 - ATP 500 - Tokyo (Hard)

Andy is the second seed here (Nadal also here).

He plays Baghdatis in round 1, Niemenen or Bogomolov Jr in round 2, Monaco is the other seed in his quarter and Ferrer would be his most likely SF oponent.

Also playing doubles with Jamie, they play Andujar and Raonic in round 1.

Well, maybe won't be too taxing.  In the five previous tournaments Andy's played with Jamie this year, he's gone out in the first round of either the singles or the doubles, and three of the times it was the singles

But it doesn't seem the greatest plan while playing Bangkok, Tokyo and Shanghai in successive weeks to throw in doubles.

Thought maybe Jamie would be developing his partnership with his new best friend, old Sa, although not sure that that's going to be a very long term one.

No doubt I will be jumped on here, from a high height most probably, but I HATE it when Andy plays doubles.

If I was being generous I would say that Andy needs to play fairly regularly with Jamie in preparation for the London Olympics. However I suspect it is more a case of him trying to prop up Jamie's doubles ranking. This event is effectively a defence of the Valencia points from last year (where Andy isn't playing this year).

On a related point when Andy next pipes up (probably in Shanghai) to complain about having to play too much tennis I hope that some one points out the following

a) He has chosen to play Doubles in Tokyo, this is the 7th doubles event he has played this year.

b) He has chosen to play 3 tournaments in a row and then have 3 weeks off before Paris. He could easily have arranged his Autumn differently and still played the two Masters Series, 1 ATP 500 and 1 ATP 250. Therefore one must conclude that he is happy playing 3 weeks in a row.

c) Excluding two very easy Davis Cup ties and the Masters Series Final he will only have competed in 17 events this year (His zero pointer for withdrawing in Dubai technically makes it 18)

Not British tennis related but has anyone noticed Mathew Ebdens run here. Wasn't he one of the Baker boys destruction men the other year in OZ?

He's had a great draw mind you but still an impressive effort from him.

Yes, Baker beat Ebden in the semis of AUS F5 and the QFs of AUS F7 in 2009, though Ebden got his own back by winning the F8 Final.

A WC then Lu in qualifying followed by Andujar in R1 looks more like a tough Challenger draw than a route to R2 in an ATP 500. LOL
