meh, im not too sure i want all our boys playing two dubs matches in one day after singles matches already. bearing in mind the mega matches for tomorrow.
(1) Jiri Vesely (CZE) v Kyle Edmund 2nd on court 11 (13) Oli Golding v (10) George Morgan 2nd on court 7
Doubles QF
(5) Mate Pavic(CRO)/ Joao Pedro Sorgi(BRA) v (3 George Morgan(GBR) /Dominic Thiem(AUT) - 4th on Court 13
(4) Liam Broady(GBR) /Oliver Golding(GBR) v Robin Kern(GER) /Julian Lenz(GER) - 4th on Court 10
Doubles semifinals to follow later, though I wouldn't be surprised if the winner of Oli/George pulled out of the doubles.
Looking at the US Open roll of honour, Andy Murray is the only previous boys finalist, so 3 semifinalists is definitely a record here. In fact the ITF has confirmed that it is the first time there have been 3 Brits in the quarter-finals of a boys singles event in any Grand Slam. As you will see below George and Oli have played 8 times, but not recently
Morgan said: We definitely deserve to be where we are at the moment because we all train very hard at home, Morgan said. Were all getting better and better, stronger and stronger, ever year.
Golding said: Its amazing. I dont think anyone would have predicted this before the tournament started. Im happy for the other guys as well.
On Friday, Morgan relied on his mental fortitude to get him through the match against Pavlasek as he didnt feel on top of his game from a physical standpoint. He found it difficult to adapt from playing two matches indoors on Thursday a situation presented by two days of rain earlier in the week and then going back outside in hot, humid conditions.
Normally, Morgan relies on his serve to set up his backhand down the line for the win. However, hes happy to change it up and come to the net.
His serve did get him out of trouble on a number of occasions in the match. He offered Pavlasek five break points but only lost serve once in the match. Nevertheless, the serve was not as reliable as Morgan wouldve liked as he only won 50 of the 119 first serve points that went into play.
At 18, Morgan is done with school and already out playing the mens futures events. But hes hoping that the U.S. Open could bring a Grand Slam title to his resume. He also made the semifinals at the Australian Open earlier in the season.
I might play the Orange Bowl (in December), but Im not sure yet, said Morgan, of his junior schedule. But Im playing this one as if its my last (junior) tournament so I want to win really bad.
Morgans wish for the semifinals became a reality later in the afternoon when Golding came through to the semifinals too: I would love to play Golding because it would guarantee that there will be a British finalist, Morgan said. We havent played each other in years.
Golding, who likes to control a match from the baseline, struggled in the first two sets. But he picked up the pace in the third set where he saved the two break points he faced, won 14 of the 17 first points he served in, and served two aces.
Ive been playing George since I was nine-years-old, the 17-year-old Golding said. Hes 5-3 up, but the last time we played I was 14 and he was 15.
Edmund also felt the hot conditions of the day, but managed to play solid to keep on top of Hossam from the start. He never offered Hossam a chance to break his serve in nine service games.
I think I found it easier to deal with the conditions than he did, Edmund said.
