Well, I can't say I think he played well, but he got the job done. First set was pretty awful - couldn't serve for toffee, loads of ue's, just scraped through in the TB. Played much better the next 2 sets, but a lot of it was due to Devvarman dropping his level. Mind you, I think he probably played out of his skin in the first set but couldn't keep it up.
Well, Haase in R2 should certainly be a step up so Andy needs to be on his game and it would help if he could get his serve working well. Certainly Haase made short work of Machado.
But anyway, it's too early in the tournament yet for me to really get into one of my agonised speels re Andy's serve
Hope he does hang around for a while though and also gives me no further reason to deliver it !

Was hitting the forehand more aggressively than a year or two ago - but at the cost of a higher ue count - pretty horrible to watch - though there were at least two well struck forehand winners down the line from a fairly static position (one on game point in set 1 - was it for 4-4?). That's two more than normal.
Agree re the serve - the stats show that this is the area that Andy can't remotely match the top 3.
I worry about Haase - he's always seemed a prospect - played well to beat Andy in Rotterdam (saw it on a stream) - missed next to nothing that day. Andy kept waiting for him to start missing.
Difficult to see anyone other than Djokovic or Murray as the winner of this tournament.
I like your optimism re Andy's chances.
Forgive the stupid question but for the Sky-less UK resident - what are the options for watching this on the web. I had a one month sky player sub a couple of years ago for the US open - but they don't seem to offer the equivalent anymore.
Does eurosport show Andy's matches - or is it just sky?
Ooops - I came on here to post that Andy plays 3rd match on Louis Armstrong tomorrow, with the second (mens') match not before 1pm or 6pm UK. So, 8pm-ish?
It can't be good for the game of tennis to have 23,000 fans for yesterday's night-time match seeing a 6-2 6-0 followed by a 6-0 6-0 6-2. Each match was effectively over as a contest after about 10 minutes. I think that if I had paid to watch, I would have been more than a little p*ssed off.
Tonight could go much the same way in Roddick v Sock, although I suspect Kirilenko v McHale could be a bit more competitive (and will have certain other attractions for the male fans, which I will not of course mention ...)
Think I might amend my initial comment to: "Difficult to see anyone other than Djokovic as the winner of this tournament."

Ratty, I'd actually been going to make a similar point, but based on the whole day and night sessions.
Day : Schiavone won 6 - 1 6 - 1, Federer 6 - 3 6 - 2 6 - 2 and S Williams 6 - 0 6 - 1
Night : Wozniacki won 6 - 2 6 - 0 and Djokovic 6 - 0 6 - 0 6 - 2
Of course one can get enthralling early matches involving the top players, and indeed when someone suggested at Wimbledon this year that scheduling top players at the show courts almost rourtinely brought comfortable wins ( and hence they shoiuld schedule more competive looking matches involving lower ranked players ) the evidence actually suggested otherewise.
But yesterday was err not exactly the most competitive couple of sessions !

I agree, but nobody much watches the early round day time matches, whoever is playing.
The way it works at the US Open is that seats in the the lower tiers of Ashe are generally only available to people who block book the entire 2 weeks.
This is why Ashe is usually empty during the day time matches, because the block bookers mainly come just in the evening and at the weekend, and the view from the top tiers is so bad that the alternative of watching a match on the other courts is preferable. In the evening there is no alternative.

I've watched matches from Arthur Ashe upper tiers, in one case right from the very top, and found it very acceptable and my eyesight isn't wondeful. Yes, I also watched outside court matches and clearly you are sort of right there with these matches. I would still prefer Arthur Ashe upper tiers any day to say watching on TV, and a really interesting match there to a rather less enthralling outside court one.
I've been there in Arthur Ashe on the second Monday ( day and night ) as well as finals. Though I did just walk up and buy tickets on the Monday, much easier for the daytime, it was actually fuller than I had anticipated even daytime, but I guess, yes, the wealthier folk down below were taking more interest come the start of the second week.
