I'm having more fun following Middlesbrough's first-round Carling Cup match away to Walsall on bet365 & Beeb live text (2-0 up ). Neil, if you read this, how on earth do you square Andy's woeful performance this evening with the optimistic spin you put on his overall prospects in North America in this morning's paper?
Bad start, tried to recover it at the end of the first and then a dire second set. Mind you Anderson was very very good, still though. Probably will do well in the dubs with big bro now.
Obviously a hugely disappointing result. While I don't want to over react to one bad match it just re-enforces my view that as things stand I can't see him taking his career to the next level. He seems to be in denial about where the problems lie and surrounded by people who are too close to him to tell him some harsh truths.
Hmm, 3 North American Hard Court Masters Series events, no match wins this year, Pretty unbelievable on what should be a real strength, especially with the guys he's lost to.
Looks to me that just like the Aussie Opens twice, this latest Wimbledon defeat has had quite an effect on him and he either hasn't really put in the work ( as has come out say after last year's Aussie Open ) or is just mentally in a pretty bad place. He is going into some tournaments not properly prepared to play anything like his best tennis. Why ?
Clearly it is very worrying the way the last year or two Andy has swung back and forth between the fairly sublime to the pretty ridiculous. and there to me is much more to it than his tennis abilty that needs sorted out. There are technical / tactical issues we can and do argue about, but there seems other ( more serious ? ) worries too.
To me, he really seems to need some strong coach / mentor. but it looks as if that person must have quite a large number of qualities and Andy is not the easest to deal with.
Anyway, not generally making the best of his talents or career just now and I wish so much better for Andy.

Dire, wasn't it? I made a point of watching even though I am having a frantically busy week. Frankly I think I would have enjoyed doing the ironing more! (and that is saying something)
Has Andy ever done well in singles in a tournament where he is playing doubles with Jamie? I can't remember one!
The problems always seem to come after a break, he played well at the DC but the break since then seems to have caused the major rustiness. He also struggled in his first couple of matches at the HC and would have lost against better quality players there at that stage.
I think Indiana makes a number of good points but I don't think there is any indication that he hasn't put the work in, far from it in fact.
At the moment I really, really fear for Andy's career. The thought that he might not take the next step is heartbreaking and I don't say this just because he is a Brit. It will be genuinely tragic if he doesn't realise his potential and for his hard work and determination alone he deserves to win a slam. However he needs to understand that the answer to every set back in not to work ever harder and to become ever fitter. As admirable as that attitude is it isn't addressing the real problems in his game, most of which are in his head. Now to be fair Andy is a genuinely world class player and in most eras he would have won grand slams by now. He is however playing in this era and if he wants to go on and achieve what he should, and in many ways deserves to, he needs to accept some very difficult home truths.
