The European Junior Championships are divided into 3 age categories, with ITF points only available for the under 18s. We have had most success in recent years in the under 16 doubles where Kyle Edmund & Luke Bambridge were finalists last year, whilst Oliver Golding & George Morgan won the title in 2009. Each nation can nominate a maximum of 2 players in each category.
The draw has not been kind with ITF top 100 players in wait for all of our under 16s and under 18s should they win their opener (and Josh Sapwell needs a big upset to get that far).
Under 18 R2 (L64)
George Giotopoulos (GRE) v Toby Martin (GBR)
Lukas Mugevicius (LTU) v Joshua Ward-Hibbert (GBR)
A good start for the under 14s who will have to wait to learn their next opponents. In the under 16s Josh lost as expected, but Evan earns a crack at one of the top 1995s
Under 14 R2 (L64)
Lucas Taylor (GBR) d. Dimitrios Skalidakis (GRE) 3-6 7-5 6-2 Joel Cannell (GBR) d. Alexander Erler (AUT) 6-2 6-1
Under 16 R1 (L128)
Matteo Donati (ITA) d. Joshua Sapwell (GBR) 6-1 6-3 Evan Hoyt (GBR) d. Mikus Losbergs (LVA) 6-2 6-0
R2
Evan Hoyt (GBR) v (2) Frederico Ferreira Silva (POR)
Toby and Josh achieved creditable scorelines, but couldn't quite upset their higher-ranked opponents. Joel took out a seed to join Evan in the last 16. Evan's chances of further progress should be sternly tested though by his next opponent, who beat Liam Broady earlier in the year.
Under 18 R3
(6) Joris De Loore (BEL) d. Toby Martin (GBR) 6-7(6) 7-6(5) 7-6(4) Dimitar Kuzmanov (BUL) d. Joshua Ward-Hibbert (GBR) 6-4 7-5
Under 16 R3
Evan Hoyt (GBR) d. Anton Desyatnik (RUS) 6-2 6-3
R4
(14) Stefano Napolitano (ITA) v Evan Hoyt (GBR)
Under 14 R3
(3) Nicolae Frunza (ROU) d. Lucas Taylor (GBR) 6-2 7-5 Joel Cannell (GBR) d. (9) Aliaksandr Halinko (BLR) 3-6 6-3 7-5
R4
(6) Roman Safiullin (RUS) or Christian Sigsgaard (DEN) v Joel Cannell (GBR)
Very good effort by Evan and Joel against higher rated opposition (Joel's opponent is 2nd in the race to the Masters against his 50th) but the end result is that as last year the last Brits standing are in the under 16 doubles
