Boys: AEGON Junior International, Newcastle - Grade 4 (Week 28)

Jonny O'Mara will look to add to the 4 singles and doubles titles secured in the last 3 weeks in a field dominated by Brits, including all 8 seeds.

The link below doesn't currently have the draw (available on the ITF site), but I expect it will be up in the morning

Just a handful of matches completed today, with Chris Pearce narrowly losing to 8th seed Matthew Kirby

A convincing pair of breadsticks handed out by Jonny to earn a second round match with fourth seed Christian Throm-Jones. Only one seed fell - Robbie Ridout losing to James Elliott, and the top half now guarantees a British finalist

I can't see any results yet, but the oop reveals a win for Jonny over the 4th seed and losses for second and third seeds Clay Crawford and Peter Ashley (to Tommy Bennett and Tatlot of France respectively) Clay isn't Peter's best surface.

DavidC  was saying clay isn't Peter's best surface, and that's been the surface for his last 3 tournaments.

Strikes me that at not yet 15 ( born 07/08/96 ), in his first year of ITF juniors and JWR 373, he has plenty time on his side, including getting better on clay.  Lost last week in Edinburgh to an in form Jonny O'Mara.  I doubt there's much to be getting worried about.

Speaking of Jonny, no real surprise if he's been a bit tired here. He's had a really good run.

I wasn't trying to sound prematurely concerned, but good to know, thanks!

It was noticeable last year that in the major TE14 clay court events it was Josh (Sapwell) who shone rather than Peter, reaching the European Championships (EC) semis (lost to Quinzi). Josh is selected (along with Evan Hoyt) for next week's EC under 16 event, whilst Peter has at least picked up his first ITF points on clay this week. I imagine his team decided that it is in his best long term interests to play on clay this summer, opting for Biesterbos like Eleanor Dean rather than Wimbledon.

An odd scoreline in the first of the quarter-finals

QF

 (5) Myles Orton d. (1) Joshua Page 0-6 6-4 6-0
 Luke Johnson d. Jonny O'Mara 6-4 6-3
Johan Sebastien Tatlot (FRA) d. (6) Jordan Angus 6-1 6-4
 Tommy Bennett d. Calvin Hemery (FRA) 7-5 2-6 6-3

SF

(5) Myles Orton v Luke Johnson
Johan Sebastien Tatlot (FRA) v Tommy Bennett
