RE: Weeks 21-22 - Roland Garros men's main draw

on the subject of commentators, anyone noticed that Mark Petchey and Chris Bailey have exactly the same voice? Only can tell them apart because Bailey is very matter-of-fact whereas Tetchy Petchey is quite opinionated!

Tipsarevic/Troicki has just retired at 2-1 in first set of doubles....I wonder which one is injured?

Troicki is recovering from an attack of food poisoning, apparently. He should be ok by Monday though - and it didn't stop him winning today in singles.

Petchey is another commentator that I find annoying mostly because of his tendancy to get over excited for no good reason.

the BBC has the massive disadvantage of the John Lloyd/Sam Smith commentary team. Those awful flat drony voices. The toe-curlingly dreadful "banter". The cliche-ridden and yawn-inducing pontifications on the state of British tennis. But mainly the TOTAL INABILITY TO SAY ANYTHING REMOTELY INTERESTING!!!!!!

Hmm, let's see, can anyone think of a reason why Lloydy might have delusions about reaching an Australian Open Final without having to face anyone in the top 15 in the world counting as winning a grand slam? winkno

Of course, to be fair to both JL and Clément, you can't ask more of players than to beat the opponents put in front of them, and in 2002 Tim showed that it's more than possible to mess it up in similar circumstances.

Laughing at Lloyd is always fun but on a more serious note I was a little worried by Andy's post match interview. He said all the right things but he looked very, very down beat. I know that Andy is never the most positive looking (and sounding) of people but he really did give the impression that he thought his chances of a good run at this event were done for.

It was shocking to hear that Berrer said he stopped using the drop shot because of Andy's injury.

According to Jonathan Overend on Radio 5 Live, that was very true about Andy yesterday.  But he is sounding quite a bit more upbeat today, going for more treatment, and depending on how things go "may" hit the practice court.  Though obviously they'ed have to be absolutely sure that he wouldn't aggravate it.

Wow re Berrer !  Yes, having drop shotted relatively successfully he basically stopped doing it until quite near the end.   If that is true ( as opposed to he just got himself generally confused  )  nice as a guy, but awful thinking as a professional tennis player  disbelief

Ok this is not directly an AM comment, but I would just like to say how spectularly poor the BBC coverage of the French Open has been today.

Fair enough not everyone is a tennis fan, and many people may have wanted to see those cars going round. But why long after the race was over were we subjected to endless footage of all and sundry blokes being chucked into a swimming pool - over and over and over and over again.

I could have been watching Djokovic , but no I get to watch some sad wet saddo instead....

All being well, Andy 4th ( if you include the unfinished match ) on Suzanne Lenglen tomorrow :

Follows Falla vs Chela ( 10.00 am BST ), Ferrer vs Monfils ( NB 11.30 am BST ) - Monfils 2 sets to 1 up, Ferrer 2 - 0 up in the 4th, and Makarova vs Azarenka

Ah - you, like me, must be restricted to Freeview. People with BBCi on satellite or cable, like my daughter, got tennis all day. I was particularly annoyed because I knew Freeview was not scheduled until 16.20 - but furious when I turned on at 16.20 and still got the F1 coverage . . . at 16.30 I gave up and watched on the BBC livestream.

So Djokovic gets a walkover through to the semis after Fabio Fognini withdraws due to a pulled muscle (sustained in his 4th round match). Not really sure that 3 days off is the best preparation for a Semi against Federer.

Andy has just concluded a light practice session.

Jonathon Overend has tweeted "Murray surely fine. That was no 'fitness test'. A gentle workout. Hard stuff done away from the cameras, I would guess."

This afernoon's weather looks very dicey so Andy might get another day to recover.

Chela comes through in 5 sets (just under 4 hours).

Hmm, after 3 pm local time and the Ferrer vs Monfils match to complete plus 3 more matches scheduled on Suzanne Lenglen.

I woudn't think the final women's match has much chance of playing on there today, and Andy's yes a bit dicey, certainly for completion even without weather problems.
