Boys: 52nd Trofeo Bonfiglio, Italy - Grade A (Week 20)

Luke Bambridge's doubles exploits have earned him a Special Exempt and an opportunity to avenge a defeat a couple of weeks ago against an Italian wildcard. George Morgan has to tackle the 1996 sensation Quinzi whilst Liam tackles a fast rising 1995 boy

R1 (L64)

(SE) Luke Bambridge (GBR) v (WC) Amerigo Contini (ITA)

(WC) Gianluigi Quinzi (ITA) v (6) George Morgan (GBR)

(Q) v (3) Oliver Golding (GBR)

(WC) Stefano Napolitano (ITA) v (12) Liam Broady (GBR)

Liam recently tweeted that he had forgotten to enter. It's not the first time a top player has done that. Last year two top players (Daniel Berta and Gianni Mina) forgot to enter the Australian Open. One ended up with a main draw wildcard whilst the other gained a qualifying wildcard. I wonder if the FFT would give him a qualifying WC if he asked.

All bar Olly are on tomorrow's oop

R1 (L64)

(SE) Luke Bambridge (GBR) v (WC) Amerigo Contini (ITA)
(WC) Gianluigi Quinzi (ITA) v (6) George Morgan (GBR)
(Q) Rodrigo Encinas (CHI) v (3) Oliver Golding (GBR)
(WC) Stefano Napolitano (ITA) v (12) Liam Broady (GBR)

Chances of getting in are negligible - all entered players would be given priority

Bad day today

R1 (L64)

(SE) Luke Bambridge (GBR) d. (WC) Amerigo Contini (ITA)  6-4 6-3
(WC) Gianluigi Quinzi (ITA) d. (6) George Morgan (GBR) 6-2 6-4
(Q) Rodrigo Encinas (CHI) v (3) Oliver Golding (GBR)  Tuesday
(WC) Stefano Napolitano (ITA) d. (12) Liam Broady (GBR) 6-4 3-6 7-6 (6)

My Italian is modest, but from what I can work out from the article I reproduce below, Broady was broken serving for the match in the third set, then went 5-1 up in the tiebreak, before suffering cramp, seeking medical assistance and incurring 2 penalty points for time violation. Clearly a controversial end, and we await Liam's tweet

---------------------------------------------------

George struggling a little at the moment and Liam probably needing a little break after playing nonstop for a long time are my explanations for those results.

Liam has teamed up with Olly, and they won their opening doubles. George has renewed his successful partnership in Australia with Mate Pavic, and they are the top seeds.

They're not even that strict in men's matches!

Ha, I was sure there had been some similar incident not too long ago and a search on ( cramp penalty ) proved remarkably successful giving me one matchup and it being what I had been vaguely trying to recall :

http://61841.activeboard.com/t40614616/boys-2011-australian-open-juniors-grade-a-weeks-3-4/?page=5&sort=oldestFirst

i.e. George Morgan beating Mate Delic ( CRO )  6 - 4  6 - 7  10 - 8  in the last 16 of the Australian Open Juniors when Delic went into full body cramp at  * 8 - 9   15 - 30  in the final set and was given a point penalty taking it to 15 - 40 for time delay.

To quote from a post at the time :  "According to Neil Harman, his trainer jumped the fence to help him, got shooed off by the umpire, and then had a point deducted."

At least I am record there as saying I didn't like it at all when applied against Delic on that occasion.  And if as seems the case, we have a similar situation with Broady here, my reaction is the same. I know some folk will say it's to do with conditioning and rules are rules for time between points.  But common sense is common sense too !
