He did go off slightly ( and was broken wasn't he?) near the beginning of second set, but instead of mentally 'going off on one' & allowing that to ruin his play for the rest of that set he reigned his mind in, focussed, and got back to playing brilliantly. (IMO)
Oh dear oh dear. I had forgotten Andy was on so early. That's not good
Was slightly worried last night when he was saying for some reasons it was easier to move on the courts later in the day after earlier matches and wouldn't be as good first off. And he also did indicate Mayer's style might prove a bit awkward. Seemingly so . He better work it out quickly or impose his own game !
Took him a set to wake up and work Funky Flo out, but then it was pretty much a steam-rollering. Grumpy and chuntery in the first set, but he managed to rein himself in and concentrate well after that.
Florian played lights-out tennis in the first set but couldn't keep it up.
Soderling vs Djokovic on not before 9.15 pm local. Have a good battle, guys
So can't imagine Andy's SF will be on early tomorrow, and whatever he's going to have much more recovery time considering it's still 7 hours earliest before these guys even get started.
Very strange match today but good to see Andy take adavatage of a soft draw for once. He must ve in with a decent shout if it is Nole in the semis. Going deep in back to back clay court masters is brutal, even Rafa has struggled tp do so in the past.
The write up on the live comentary for the atp says this:
Andy Murray defeats Florian Mayer 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 and becomes the first male Brit to make it into the final four at Rome. If you ignore the fact that Muzz thought the match started at 1 pm and everything before that was just a hit-out with some guy he'd never seen before, he was brilliant. It took him a while (a set, in fact) to work out how Mayer was hitting and also to defrost his own service (which still looked a bit burnt on the outside, frozen in the middle, like a good British sausage on a barbecue), but overall, Murray got the job done. He's in the Soderling/Djokovic part of the draw.
So, "The Joker" it is (he beat Söderling by 3 & 0!). Let's hope the brilliant, fully-focused Andy shows up to wipe that self-satisfied smirk off his face!
