Les Petits As 2011, Tarbes, France

The prestigious under 14 event starts on Monday with plenty of British interest. Liam Broady and Laura Robson were recent finalists, but the indications are that a repeat is unlikely this year. In the marginally weaker warm-up Teen Tennis tournament in Bolton, there were just a couple of British quarter-finalists (Lana Rush and Joel Cannell).

We don't currently have a British player in the Tennis Europe top 20 of either sex, though Auray winner Maia Lumsden is one of the top ranked 1998 girls. Unfortunately she has a tough draw against a top 10 ranked Croatian. Four boys are also in the last round of qualifying.

Live scoring available at http://www.lespetitsas.com/mondial/index.php?tmpl=match_direct.html&titleName=live

Boys R1 (L64)

(3) Andrey Rublev (RUS) v Bjorn Thomson (GBR)
Lucas Taylor (GBR) v Sasha Marzetti (ITA)

Girls R1 (L64)

Chiara Grimm (SUI) v Freya Christie (GBR)
(9) Ana Konjuh (CRO) v Maia Lumsden (GBR)
Q/LL v Kyra Akinnibi (GBR)
Anna Brogan (GBR) v (3) Jelena Ostapenko (Lat)
Katherina Gerlach (GER) v Lana Rush (GBR)

Is it fair to say this is a little worrying. In the past we normally have top under 14 juniors who then don't fully make the transition into great pro's. If we suddenly have a derth of talent of tennis players between the ages 0f 12-14 then surely the LTA have gone even further backwards than we assumed?

You may not have noticed, we do have two boys at the top of the world junior game. This is only one rung off the professional ladder.  It bodes well that when Andy Murray achieved this feat he was the only Brit.  Currently there are two in the top 10 with another at 21.  This is of course no guarantee but they are better placed then most to succeed. Just look at where Andy is now.

I think that the thing causing concern is that in the particular age-group, 12 to 14s, we don't seem to be doing as spectacularly as we have in the past few years. No one would dispute that a number of the 16 to 18s are doing well! But I would look to others who have more wisdom than I to say whether the extremely successful runs by some of our juniors in the past few years are something that we could expect to be sustained consistently. My own guess is that no country -- even the ones with the best development systems -- will see classes like the Bettles/Morgan/Golding and Hoyt/Bambridge/Edmunds/Broady groups on a regular basis.

Don't forget Ashley/Sapwell as well.

Doing well at the 12-14 age group, is meaningless, at least in the U18s they are closer to the starting line.

Hey philwrig you mention Ashley and Sapwell. Why?
The British 1 and 2 for the U15s are Stoute/Sendegeya.

If I remember correctly Sapwell won the u14 Orange Bowl and Ashley won the u14 Eddie Herr.  Pretty impressive achievements for British juniors of their age, and both were seeded so must have a decent ranking.
Maybe Stoute and Sendegeya are a year older and thus marginally better but I don't have any facts to back up that argument.

Sapwell has played no ITF events. Ashley one. So obviously they were playing different circuits (I guess Sapwell and Ashley were playing TE events?) so you can hardly compare the rankings.

Fair point but if you look at the Tennis Europe rankings both Ashwell and Sapwell are well ahead of the other two and that ranking is based upon a greater number of events played by each player so maybe a more accurate guide.
