Where does this put him in the rankings?

He'll be 5 on Jan 1 when the 1992 boys drop out (Oli will be 6 and Liam inside 20)

George quietly displayed complete confidence in his ability to win here throughout the tournament, judging by the quotes he gave the host website and the LTA - thoroughly vindicated. Well done George clap.gif Now he needs to find this belief elsewhere.

According to the Zoo Tennis lady on her twitter, Peter Ashley won another 14U tournament today to follow up last week's win at the Eddie Herr International, so he is still in Florida, which perhaps means he will be playing in the Junior Orange Bowl, which starts towards the end of this week and runs until the 23rd.

The score in the doubles final was 7-6(6) 4-6 [10-5], with Liam Broady and partner on the losing end.

Yes, all our top 1996 boys (Ashley, Sapwell, Sendegeya and Manji) are on the entry list for the Junior Orange Bowl and most of those who play Eddie Herr and Junior Orange Bowl fill the intervening week with the tournament organised by Patricio Apey in Miami.

What's even more impressive about George winning the title here is the ease with which he did it. He dropped just one set (just like Federer in 1998) and he dropped just 32 games in total, 9 less than Federer did when he won.

I know that's a very dodgy comparison given that Fed beat Melzer early on, Nalbandian in the semis and Coria in the Final, i.e. it was a very strong year, but an irresistible one nonetheless! smile.gif

9 less games, you say?

Surely a good indicator for at least 17/18 grand slam successes in the future biggrin .

On a serious note, who was the last boy to win a GA? Probably something really obvious, but I can't remember.

My junior title lists only go back to the start of 2008, but there haven't been any GA singles wins in the last 3 years for GB boys or girls, unless you count slams as GAs for the girls.

For the boys, the best wins have been G1s for Dan Smethurst and Marcus Willis in 2008 and for James Marsalek in 2010.

I'm sure if there was an obvious one just before that, someone like David will know!

Yes, I'd count grand slams as GA's.

Surely it doesn't stretch all the way back to Andy at the U.S '05?

Turns out there are only 10 GAs or equivalent, including slams. The 6 non-slam GAs are the Copa Casablanca, the Copa Gerdau (Banana Bowl until 2007), the Italian Junior Open, the Osaka Mayors Cup, the Orange Bowl and the Youth Olympics ... no Brits have won the singles at those events in the last 7 years, so for the boys, Muzza's USO Junior title would have been the last one - except that it was in 2004 not 2005.

Report from Colette with a pic - http://tenniskalamazoo.blogspot.com/2010/12/davis-needs-three-sets-but-claims-girls.html - the bit about George starts about halfway down.

D'oh!

But yeh, this just puts in to perspective George's achievement today. Well done young man.

Slams may count as GAs but I wouldn't count half the GAs in the top 10 junior tournaments. The G1/G2 events in the 2 weeks before a slam are much tougher than, say, the Osaka mayors cup. Fortunately for George, this is one of the real ones, and a great win.

Does this mean he gets a WC into either Indian Wells or Miami?
