Strange match from Andy, at times he was very good and at times well below par. he was never really pushed and easily did enough so hopefully they will be a couple of extra gears for tomorrow.
The draw certainly opened up for him but you can only beat who's in front of you and these were players who came through instead of main guys so have presumably generally been in some form.
However Andy has played, his stats have been really good all week, well other than his traditional first serve % which hasn't got above 54% after his first match.
After only giving up 8 points on serve, that was only 10 against Monaco including clearly at least 4 in the game he was broken ( only second break against him in the week ). Only gave up 2 in the second set !
I woiuld imagine that this must be pretty much the smoothest progress Andy has ever had to a Masters final.
Great by the way to hear about that tremendous defensive point. That's what he's got in his locker that that can set him apart. The thing is to have it there when needed, not to generally over-rely on more basic defensive play.
Can't help but be irritated by journos who keep citing tournaments won; the playing field for this metric has changed since the introduction of mandatory Master's tournaments for the top 30 -12 of the 18 tournaments a top 30 person enters will have all top 30 players in them. Only in 6 tournaments will the fields be a bit weaker - and here the ranking points are lower, and for players like Andy they are usually used as warm up events for the Master's, not to be taken too seriously (and certainly not to exhaust oneself in, lest the big points go missing the week after).
Thus, top players actually win fewer tournaments now. But the wins when they happen are more significant, as they are beating all the best, not (as in previous times) some of the best.
Ranking points here v. useful in keeping distance to Soderling, given the AO is coming up (where Andy has 1200 points to defend).

Good point. Out of the last 9 tournaments Andy has won 5 of them have been Masters Series events.
Or to put it another way does anyone seriously believe that Jimmy Connors 107 titles means that he has achieved more in the game that Roger Federer and his 63 titles.

So, it's 9.30 in the morning again. I hope it's Toronto Andy and not AO Andy that comes out to play.
Well its nice weather , about 25 deg, but I think it was hotter than that in Toronto. He seems to cope with physical heat better than alot of players, due to his Miami training. However, dealing with mental heat seems to be where he needs more training. maybe he should take up meditation (actually that is a serious suggestion )

Stunning performance from Andy today. He took the match to Federer and never let him settle and every time Fed looked like fighting back Andy responded straight away. When was the last time Fed took any of 6 break points?
It's performances like this that leave me convinced that it is only a matter of time before the elusive Slam is won.
