Murray returns to action this week in a tournament that he didn't play last year so every point counts this time out. Murray seems to have a favourable draw in Shanghai.
R2: Stepanek or Yal (WC) R3: Almagro (16) Other potential players: Qualifier, Baghdatis, Dolgopolov QF: Youzhny (8), Other potential players: Tsonga (12), Querrey, F.Lopez, Berrer, Mayer SF: Nadal (1), Other potential players: Davydenko (6), Verdasco (9), Melzer (13)
Hopefully Murray can take advantage of his good draw and score some serious points and distance himself from Soderling in the rankings by the time Valencia comes knocking

Ranking 465, age 21, plays almost exclusively Futures - Andy can't have a problem here, can he? (But then I suppose Radek might have thought that as well)
However. . . further research shows Bai was unranked until July, and has shot up the rankings like a rocket since then. Andy had better take this match seriously - because if he does, he should still have no problem. I wonder if Steps got taken by surprise?

OEM was impressed with Bai today, but it looks like Radek was a bit ill too - from his tweets:
Bai a fine prospect, wiry, confident
Bai breaks 1st game, 2nd set to love. Stepanek in one of his strange moods. It could blow over.
Stepanek takes 2 pills at changeover, looks as pale as a ghost - it's when he could be dangerous!!
Both as edgy as each other, Bai holds to 4-2 but seems to be tiring. Stepanek gifting too much

Andy's match is 3rd on the main court tomorrow with the 2nd starting at 2pm local, so maybe about 8.30 - 9am here.
Considering the forecast is terrible for tomorrow, their OOP is very optimistic, considering they only have the one court with a roof - it looks like all the matches left over from today plus all tomorrow's normal schedule.
Don't know why they were only using 3 courts ( 2 for singles ) on Monday and only 8 scheduled singles matches ( which they got through even allowing for some rain with shifting things about a bit ) then all the 14 remaining 1st round and a 2nd round match scheduled today.
According to the BBC Murray needs to reach the SFs here to confirm his place at the World Tour Finals. He is now already in the R16 so needs to beat Chardy followed by probably either Tsonga or Youzhny to get there. Fingers crossed!

Won't be Youzhny: he was despatched today by the German journeyman, Florian Mayer, by 4-6 7-6(5) 1-6!
Andy took the first set 6-3. I didn't see the first 6 games, I overslept. . . He is still not playing very well, but enough to get the job done hopefully.
