Boys: 2010 Tennis Europe Junior Masters - 14 & under (Week 40)

The end of year Masters event for Tennis Europe under 14 and under 16s takes place this Friday to Sunday in Naples, Italy. Evan Hoyt qualified for the under 16s but opted not to compete. In contrast Peter Ashley just missed out on automatic qualification, but gets in to the under 14s because of a couple of withdrawals. Since these withdrawals are actually the two top qualifiers Gianluigi Quinzi and Andre Biro, Joshua Sapwell ends up as the highest ranked entrant to the 8 player field.

Previous winners include Tommy Robredo, Rafael Nadal and in 2008 Liam Broady. The format is a 3 round knockout.

A great first day gives us 2 semifinalists

R1

Peter Ashley (GBR) d. (1) Philip Gresk (POL) 6-1 7-6(5)
(3) Joshua Sapwell (GBR) d. Oliver Nagy (HUN) 6-2 6-2

SF

Peter Ashley (GBR) v (4) Johannes Haerteis (GER)
(3) Joshua Sapwell (GBR) v (2) Filippo Baldi (ITA)

The overall TE14 rankings differ slightly from the Race to the Masters rankings, which is why Josh is seeded 3 rather than 1.

(3) Joshua Sapwell (GBR) d. (2) Filippo Baldi (ITA) 6-3 6-4

F

(4) Johannes Haerteis (GER) v (3) Joshua Sapwell (GBR)

I don't have his complete family tree to hand wink  - however his father is called Paul as you will see from the following article (from 2009)

I haven't heard of Danny Sapwell - did you actually mean Danny Sapsford?

Thanks David.   Peter does look rather younger than 14 in these photos.
