Junior Davis Cup Finals - San Luis Potosi, Mexico (Week 39)

The Junior Davis Cup Finals start tomorrow with the draw being made live on http://www.lalomacd.com.mx/  at 11pm BST tonight. The same website promises live streaming from 2 show courts daily.

The British team nominated is as expected Luke Bambridge, Kyle Edmund and Evan Hoyt - the only one not to have any 1994s (all the other teams except South Africa have at least 2). The Aussies are notably captained by Mark Woodforde. Full nominations can be found at http://www.itftennis.com/shared/medialibrary/pdf/original/IO_52221_original.PDF

France are probably the team to beat with Bourgue and Barrere both inside the top 100, though the strength of Latin American teams is difficult to gauge, as they play few ITF events as under 16s. The Group winners were Chile, but Brazil has the number 1 ranked COSAT player (Monteiro)

Surely a year too early for our boys.

I only really fear 3 teams, France Canada india, don't think Edmund should fear anyone, semi's wouldn't suprise me of these teams are avoided, and of those 3 France are the only ones I would think we were clear underdogs

Kyle and Luke ( and indeed Evan ) were born in January 1995 so won't really be too much younger than many of the 1994 boys.

Although clearly next year could really be their time, I can see them being generally very competitive here without possibly being quite there at the end.

Kyle and Luke are clearly our best 1994 or 1995 boys after Liam, but is Evan not maybe a surprise pick ?

I think it's the logical choice. Evan was the third player in qualifying, has played doubles with Kyle and Luke, and he was on a similar level to Kyle and Luke in the under 14s but has opted to play mainly Tennis Europe under 16s this year - successfully, being the only British player in a qualifying position for the Masters. None of the 1994 boys (apart from Liam who clearly doesn't make himself available) are outstanding

opposite side of the draw to france,

tough looking group, where we will have to face the 1996 Bisht, interesting.

think we play brazil tommorow, not 100%

looking foward to edmund vs bisht, think kyle will take it, i simply don't trust this kids ranking, (btw he was ranked 200 at the start of the year!!)

Kyle will probably not be playing Bisht. Nominations have to be based on rankings at the start of qualifying, so Luke (and Bisht) play the no. 1 singles. Kyle will only play no.1 if Luke is rested or injured.

Kyle has got the team off to a good start, but Luke has a tough match against the COSAT number 1, who is ranked just outside 100 ITF

GBR 1 Brazil 0

Kyle Edmund (GBR) d. Pedro Dumont (BRA) 76(3) 63
Luke Bambridge (GBR) v Thiago Monteiro (BRA)

Mexico is currently 1-0 up against Japan in the streamed match (click on the link to La Loma TV from the above Mexican site)

The second singles went according to the rankings, so it's a decisive doubles. Similarly for India v Czech Republic, after Bisht won the top singles. Remarkably though France have lost to Latvia

GBR 1 Brazil 1

Kyle Edmund (GBR) d. Pedro Dumont (BRA) 76(3) 63
Thiago Monteiro (BRA) d. Luke Bambridge (GBR) 62 75

There is a pretty good report here:

http://www.lta.org.uk/News/All-news-items/2010-09-27/Winning-start-for-Great-Britain-in-Mexico/

Next up are Czech Republic (5) at 4pm BST, who lost to India 2-1 in the first match.
