Don't know if Laura was trying some things out as she indicated she intended to do in her first couple of matches.
But at least it's a win against an American on Grandstand Court. Again don't know how big or vocal the crowd was but hopefully a good experience for her.
Watched the first set and a half where Laura was clearly the better player, but for whatever reason was missing shots she would normally make. Her opponent was quite feisty for a junior and cameback from 0-40 in her own service game twice. The crowd must have totalled about 200 with it being basically 50/50. Laura became nervous and agitated as the match wore on but if she had of taken a fair percentage of game point chances would have won this say 3&3. Better body language than at Wimby where she looked half interested, just looked like she felt under pressure to win a match comfortably which of course this was not. Serve looked very good at times, getting a decent kick off the court. Movement was generally as per usual, but occasionally looked better than I've seen it. Her coach sat by himself at one end of the court, and there was no sign of anyone else watching. Her oppenent in the next round plays in a very similar style and Laura will have to be sharper than this to guarantee the victory.
Yes, was just looking at the stats and these tie in with what Phil says that the score could have been easier for Laura.
She just converted 2 / 12 BPs ( 1 / 8 in the 2nd set ) whereas her opponent converted her only one in the second set. Overall points were a clear 87 - 68 in Laura's favour, which of course isn't what counts but can show the main momentum.

Strange that Bok was just by himself, there was quite a big British presence in the various 1st round matches for all the Brits. Greg and Marcus Buckland where around from the Sky studio, with Greg sitting himself next to Laura and Oli's Mum for their respective matches and basically giving them a play-by-play commentry of every point. Draper was there with a few other coaches I didn't recognise and Paul Annacone's daughter, according to the name on her pass.
I saw plenty of LTA support there but unlike most people who write reports on this board....I was there....
Very good, hope you enjoyed it. Thank you for that clarifying information re the LTA support.
I enjoyed the matches at the US Open in 2008 when I was there. It's good when folk get the opportunity to see tennis live, that not everyone manages to have, even events closer to home. Though many on this board have often been among the very few spectators at such as fututes and given first hand accounts on what they have seen.
Yes, not being there can give a rather false impression of some things, but it is not unreasonable to pass on some perceptions from say watching on TV when others may have seen nothing. Be a darn quiet board if nooone wrote about matches unless they were there
