RE: Week 32 - Toronto Masters - Final: Andy v Roger Federer

I know, in the grand scheme of things, this win is not really very important. But I think it WAS very important to Andy: I was terrified that if Fed won again, for the 4th time in a row and the third time in a final, it would do terrible damage to Andy's just rediscovered confidence. And at least now Fed can no longer say, "I always beat him when it matters, in finals" - he'll have to change it to "in slams" or " in best-of-five". Even if he does, Andy can think, well, if I can win the first two sets in a slam, I'll have a darn good chance!

Despite the Federer fanatics on other boards claiming Fed doesn't care about this level of play, I think it would have been important for his own confidence to win this. He reckoned he had Andy sussed. He hasn't done too well himself since winning in Australia. His very loud yell of "C'mon!" when Andy put the ball long to give him the break-back just after the rain delay in the second set, showed to me that he cared about winning this one.

We all know that even when Andy does win a slam there will be people out there who will find someway to talk down his achievement no I mean obviously Federer didn't care about this torunament, it's not like he had to dig deep big time against Berdych and Djokovic.

Yes this was a very important win for Andy for many reasons mainly that he hadn't won a title since Valencia and it would it have understandably raised the question of whether he can beat Federer when it matters.

A few things that really stood out from the week as a whole.

1. For the most part he was nice and aggressive, nothing over the top but good controlled aggression at the right times.

2. I can't recall ever seeing him hit his forehand so well.

3. I have never seen him look so in control of his emotions.

Late post here re Andy's win. I was very impressed every time he seemed to be sliding a bit, or Federer gaining ground he upped his game and got back on top. He said something in this interview about expressing himself and his emotion via the tennis itself and I think if you can do that is the key to being a master craftsman (in any field really). So yes, really really delighted with the win which was well deserved.

A little bit worried about all those towels used for mopping the lines and wondering if they do end up in general laundry, or are they specially reserved for 'groundwork'? wink.gif

It's just like when a manager leaves a football team - they are guaranteed to win the next game!
