RE: Week 32 - Toronto Masters - QF : Andy vs David Nalbandian

Yes, very good performance by Andy.  So many shots played with purpose to move Nalby around where he didn't want to be.  Nalby has no doubt played better, but what was coming from the other side I think steadily got to him.

Good controlled agression.  Andy indeed has huge defensive talent, in my view the best in the business, and it isa huge talent.  I think some folk's considered view ( not the morons smile ), and certainly mine, is that he sometimes falls back on that too much and allows others to dictate, rather than it be what sets him apart when needs must. Not today, great work  smile

Good serving today.  It will for now always be a bit of a worry that some days his serve his on and some days not and it makes life so much easier when it's going well.

Anyway, if it's to be Nadal, it should be fun.  They have had some great matches, and Rafa does often seem to bring out the best in Andy, if not at Wimby certainly in their hard court meetings.

Nobody on here expressed the views I was ascribing moron status to,and weren't included in the description either.

Sorry I was(uncharacteristically) being unclear and irascible at the same time.

I was referring to tennis discussion board MTF.

Ahh, yes, not a place I dip my toe into very often.  (At least the Mens)

l was unable to watch the match today and feared the worst after some patchy performances from Andy recently. No need to worry, though. From all accounts he played like we all know he can.smile I only hope he has got his poorer matches outta the way and from now on it's going to be plain sailing.nod.gif

Whisper it: Rafa's in a bit of trouble. *2-5

Superb performance.

Served really well and played nice and aggressive.

He will need to maintain that performance against Rafa but he has a good chance if he can do.

I'm not being a pain honest, but to me his aggression in that game was pretty average, serving well gave him the chance to control some rallies on his own serve that's the main difference IMO.The foundation to me was his defending making Nalbandian feel hopeless when trying to hurt him.

What a relief that a well focussed good ball striking performance like that has been produced again at last.

I wouldn't want him to be much more aggressive than he was today. For me he struck the right balance between his natutal defensive game and knowing when to attack.

Oh good grief ! Reading the couple of previous posts I thought Andy had lost but no I can rest easy tonight.
BTW I had firmly expected Bandy to beat Andy, more to do with Bandys agression, specifically against British players. Anyone remember him having a pop at the sainted Tim ?

Indeed I do. I was a bit of a fan of Nalby, but not now - I still haven't forgiven him for that!

He was far from his best. Kohlschreiber had a BP at 3-2 in the third set but he failed to get a pretty average second serve back in play.

If he doesn't play better tomorrow I would be very confident of a Murray victory. I do however suspect that Rafa will play better tomorrow.

Andy, quoted on the ATP site :

"It was one of the best matches I've played this year probably," Murray said of his performance. "I served well today and got the first good hits in in a lot of the rallies, so I was able to dictate a lot of the points. I didn't give him that many looks at second serves on any tight points and came up with big first serves when I needed them. That definitely helped. Movement was good and the defending was good."

That is good point re first good hit, he didn't wait for Nalby to be the aggressor, and once he got on top in rallies he generally had Nalby where he wanted him.  Serving well helped of course, but there was just a good general attitude to taking control.

I think he more often goes out with that attitude against players he expects to hit consistently  i.e. particularly Nadal  and in this case Nalbandian.  Trouble sometimes rears its head against big, but less consistent hitters, when I feel he has gone in thinking he can rely more on them breaking  down, and when he realises that's not happening that day, it can be difficult to change his style.
