Girls: National Championships (U18), Roehampton (Week 32)

The girls draw has been weakened by the absence of over half the current top 10 ranked players, giving the opportunity for one of the Rens, seeded 1 and 3 to claim the title. One of their rivals, second seed Lucy Brown, has an intriguing first round match against in-form wildcard Pippa Horn

Katy and Eleanor should be playing in Luxemburg. Because they are both in lower age groups they would need an Age Exemption to compete in the under 18s. I don't think either meet the criteria specified, but I expect they could have been given a WC like Pippa (and Luke).

The LTA has finally updated the drawsheets and Pippa continues her fine form, upsetting second seed Lucy Brown. Minor seeds Emily Crowe and Sian Bayliss were other casualties

Both Rens, Ruth Seabourne and Pippa Horn all made the quarters. If they make it through a Ren vs Ren final may be interesting after the reports on their last encounter.

I'd like to see Daneika step it up and take this title, on her Wrexham form she is definitely the favourite.

Disappointment for Daneika, as we have a Jen Ren, Askew SF in the top half and a Jess Ren, Horn SF in the bottom half.

Be interesting to see how Pippa Horn does against Jess Ren.

She's not yet 15 ( dob 30/09/95 ) and has certainly been on a roll the last few weeks.

Easy to forget, by the way, that Jess herself is still a couple of weeks short of her 16th birthday  (  dob 23/08/94 )

With Katy Dunne, at about 15 1/2, in between Jess and Pippa, Eleanor Dean about 14 1/2 and coming up behind Katie Boulter and Harriet Dart, both just turned 14, quite a few to keep an eye on.

In the spirit of being annoying would that DOB not make her 25?

There was also an upset in the doubles with Pippa Horn / Amy Hoburn beating top seeds Lucy Brown / Jennifer Ren 6-2, 6-1. That's a 1476 point difference in ITF junior rankings overcome. They now play third seeds Sian Bayliss / Daneika Borthwick.

The other semi is the fourth/second seeds Amy Askew / Chloe Murphy vs Jessica Ren / Ruth Seaborne.

Good to see some interviews, but someone should explain to the LTA you put the lights behind the camera, not behind the interviewee; or is someone taking guidelines on avoiding giving younger players too much media exposure too literally?

Nice to see interviews like that.  The girls came across well, and it is just really good, particularly with someone so new on the block as Pippa, to be able to relate just a little more to them than just a name that you watch their scores week to week.

Anyway nice that Pippa has got her GCSE options carefully considered  wink.gif
