RE: Week 29 - ITF ($25K) - Wrexham, Hard

I thought exactly the same as you about Laine. When I heard the umpire introduce her last week I had to check the order of play to see who he was actually referring to. I only went twice to Woking and it was later on when not as many players were left but there seemed to be quite a few coaches around, not just for the British players. There were a couple from Gosling for Babos, Barthel travelled with her Mum and the Uzbekistani who reached the semis also had a coach with her.

Don't think that players normally get the hotel provided for them. I stayed overnight at Nottingham in the same one as a few of the players and it didn't appear as though it was provided free of charge as Mel was booking in just ahead of me.

I know Lisa tweeted about it but Laura must have stayed at home during the week as I saw her at Thorpe Park today. My new claim to fame is being on the same rollercoaster as Laura, Lisa, Jo Henderson and I think Sian Bayliss while Joss Rae and someone I didn't recognise didn't fancy it and waited with the bags at the exit!

There were quite a few mothers in attendance with their daughters, but very few coaches.
Just a random note that I heard during the week was that Sian Bayliss had officially retired.

Thanks for the report everyone.

I think what is more impressive about Heather (rather than the two 92 girls ahead of her being younger) is that she only made the commitment to become a pro at the end of last year. She has had to learn so much so quickly when most of the players of her age have been able to ease themselves into competition and gradually mature.

I remember Martina Hingis spoke out against the age eligibility rules and the fact that they don't allow a player to make their mistakes at a young age, but it has been even tougher for Heather. She is ony 17 spots off her goal for the year and I really hope she can go even further.

Couldn't agree more.

As I said I think Heather has matured so well during the year.  She started the year with I felt many players around her age having much more general and particularly senior tournament experience and having been able to give tennis a much fuller commitment.

To have now reached the stage now, not much more than half way through the year, of having only two younger girls ahead of her in the rankings ( the two 93 girls, Tamljanovic and Larcher De Brito ) I just highlighted as an example of how well she has performed and how far she has come this year.

That statistic in itself would be very encouraging.  In her circumstances, while initially also chasing her qualifications, it is terrific.
