RE: Girls: Wimbledon Juniors 2010

With regard to her support from the LTA, the commentators said that the tennis centre where she is training at the moment is itself supported by the LTA, so she is getting indirect support that way. It wasn't made clear whether she is completely out in the cold with regards to personal support.

That was a deplorable against Tara at break point 6-5 down.

Nonetheless, Laura's game picked up in the 2nd and Tara's game dissapeared after the call. All in all, a bit of a damp squib compared to the ollie match.

Long time lurker here, without wishing to be too unpleasant to Tara, her mobility is hindered by her physique at the moment.

I understand over players are built like Tara, but for a girl of her height she needs to be far more mobile.

Perhaps I am just being mean, but she needs to get into the gym a bit more.

She certainly has some puppy fat around her belly, however she seems to be quite mobile anyway, so not too sure it is that big a hinderance. I mean Clisters looks to me to have a slightly larger belly than most (but to be fiar she is a newish mum) and look how well she is doing.

Has anyone else noticed that David Mercer (or it mightbe Barry Davis) seems obsessed about our young female players being fat. He justified over Tara Moore, but yesterday he accused Laura Robson of having too much puppy fat which I thought was unfair

It's been clear from the coverage, both radio and television, that in general the commentators have little or no knowledge of the British Juniors.  Mercer/Davies had to ask his co-commentator (Sam Smith) to tell him about Moore.

Even Sue Barker kept banging on about Laura, completely ignoring the fact she was playing another Brit in the quarters! Their knowledge doesn't seem to extend beyond Laura Robson.

Add to that the astonishing attack from Lloyd on Golding - that one is a real disgrace. Desperately hope Ollie can ram those words down his throat.

Rant over!

It appears David Mercer has apologised for his puppy fat remark

As mean as I sound RE: Tara you cannot deny it is a problem for her.  Personally I feel that the same problem has held Kleybanova back from making the impact that her talent merits

She only needs conditioning, however it is imperative that she takes this step forward, particularly in the crucial transition from juniors to seniors.  She is a talented player, but unfortunately there was only one athlete out there.

You can call me whatever you like, the truth is that all her competitors are going to be working as hard as they can to be a top player.  The rewards are so great that our British girls have to work so hard.  Talent alone is not enough.  Conditioning, both physical and mental make so much difference.

One last thought, indulging our players will get us nowhere.  It is vitally important that they know what they have to do to get to the top, if they do not want to do that, then they are not going to make it.

I'm surprised its still on Court 12 tomorrow; do they not think Ollie & Laura followed by Pat Cash could fill Court 2?

I wonder how much Lloyd and Castle have ever watched Ollie before the quite early "not going to make it" remarks.

Gee, if they knew nothing about Laura and watched her first set vs Tara they'ed probably say she was a pretty no-hoper spraying the ball all over the place.

Strange match this one. I suspect most matches involving Tara are not going to make pleasant viewing due to the fact that rallies in excess of six shots are going to be very rare. Impressed with her serve though and if she could just rein in her ground shots somewhat I feel her results would become much more consistent. I still think the future is looking much more rosier for Tara.

As for Laura she can get away with a poor performance in the first set and still win in two. Will have to play better than this to win the title, but I wouldn't be surprised if she does.

I always read this site but I have never posted anything until now. I am Tara's mother and your comments are totally unfair since you do not know Tara well enough to make such statements. The facts are that at one time in the past I also thought like you and the NTC also were thinking along the same lines. Yes Tara looks large but the fact is that it's her body type.........The NTC tried to slim her down with strict dieting and gym work, she did loose weight. However the cost of this was very high, she had stomach cramps and irratic menstral problems. NTC doctors could not help. A very upset Tara called and told me this in tears as the pain was unbearable every month.

I quickly realised that the NTC were making the same mistake as I did with her dieting so I immediately told her to drink full fat milk and her body stabalized.

Everyone's body is different. Example Kim Clijsters has said before......She copied Henning to go the the gym and worked heavily but ended up injuring herself. She said she will never do it again as it was a mistake. Another example, Jennifer Capriati. Her whole life she was heavy and lots of people always used to talk about it just like you and were making it a big issue. She openly said that her weight has never been a problem with her tennis career. So before you make a comment you need to review more of her previous matches to get a better overall view of her true performance.

Thank you very much, milo, for coming on here and giving us such clarification.

As I said before I have at times thought there were some problems re weight / fitness with some of the GB female tennis players ( as no doubt with some of the males ), and on some occasions I am sure there was.

I did agee here that I thought chavkev had a point, as it is clear have others over time including supposed knowledgeable folk at the NTC who saw her and watched her up at close quarters.  It is difficult in a forum such as this not to occasionally stray into what will be seen as more personal matters, but in general we here just want the Brirish players to do well and be all the can be.

In light of what you have said, I would like to apologise for what I have said re Tara in the weight / fitness regard.

I wish her all the best in the coming months and years to climb up these rankings and have as successful and enjoyable a tennis career as she can.

Females especially teenage girls are very sensative to anyone saying that they have weight issues in public. It can be a fatal subject. Her coach will work with her privately!
