Wimbledon - R1 - Andy vs Jan Hajek

A hopefully reasonably untroubled opener for Andy against Hajek, don't want to extent too much energy in the first round, just ask Fed and Djoko  wink.gif

Hajek of the Czech Republic is WR 90 and has evidently never won a grass court match as a senior pro and has only had one appearance at Wimbledon.  Never met Andy.

I know our lad hasn't been in the greatest of form, but I've got to take him to win this in straight sets.

Agreed....may just drop the 5 or 6 games if in the mood...otherwise 10 or 11 games.

Scheduled for No 1 court following the Kendrick vs Tsonga match, play starts on No 1 at 1 pm.

I thought Andy resided on Centre Court after all his 6 matches were there last year, but he's having to slum it  wink.gif  on No 1 tomorrow.

Hmmm a break down in the first set ..... Not exactly the start needed

Came through 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 in the end.

Started the match very slowly but once he got the break back in the first set he ran away with it. A nice easy straight sets wins is what we were hoping for to begin with and it was a pretty decent performance, although not his best obviously.

It will be Jarkko Nieminen in the second round for Murray after he won 6-4, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 against Stefan Koubek (having been 5-2 up in the third set).

Nieminen is ranked 67 in the world (in both singles and doubles oddly - there is a challenge for Steven to find another player with the same ranking in both singles and doubles), and had lost both his previous matches on grass this year, but they were against Federer and Becker who are both very adept on the surface.

He reached the QF's back in 2006 so is a solid enough grass courter, but doesn't hit the ball hard enough to trouble Murray.

Murray has won both their previous matches (6-4, 6-7, 6-3 in Canada in 2006 and 7-6, 6-3 in Paris in 2007) and should make it 3-0 on Thursday.

Also Murray's potential R16 opponent, Juan Carlos Ferrero is now out too! Got beat by Xavier Malisse in 4 sets! Now the highest ranked potential opponent in the last 16 is 18th seed and Queens winner, Sam Querrey

I'm surpised there isn't more of a reaction to how Andy played especially in the 2nd and 3rd set he was serving really well, hitting winners of both sides and generaly getting the consistency right between attack and defense. This for me was some of his best level of tennis since the Aus open.

I didn't see much of this through a combination of working and watching Heather when I watched anything (I tend to save watching Andy for later in the tournament, though that's been a risky policy recently!) but if he continues to play like he was playing in the bits of the 2nd and 3rd sets that I did see, I'll be very happy!

I can't help wondering whether this new-found willingness to shunt Fed and Muzza off to Court 1 for a day each has got something to do with the fact that they'll be hoping to get the 2012-2016 Court 1 debenture issue oversubscribed next year, and hence they might want current holders thinking about renewing and prospective new applicants to get the impression that they might have a better chance of seeing those two players in future.

Ryan Harrison WR 234 is the only other player who currently has identical singles and doubles rankings in the ATP lists. (I wonder if anyone can fathom out how I worked that out in less than 2 minutes ... smile)
