Boys: AEGON Junior International, Roehampton - Grade 1 (Weeks 24-25)

The Roehampton tournament begins tomorrow with two rounds of qualifying at the Civil Servic Sports Ground in Chiswick, followed by a gap before the main draw begins on Sunday.

The draw for qualifying can be found at http://www.lta.org.uk/Global/Downloads/Results/2010/AEGON%20Junior%20International/Roehampton%20JUN/Boys%20singles%20qualifying.pdf

Of the top players who were not given wildcards initially Chris Simpson, Richard Gabb and James Marsalek feature in qualifying, so it is likely that two of Andrew Bettles, Lewis Burton and Robert Carter won the play-off with the other possibly given Ashley Hewitt's wildcard, if he has made the main draw on ranking.

Qualifying completed with Richard Gabb upsetting top seed Sam Barry (who beat Ollie in a recent Grade 1 QF). James Marsalek took out the Aussie third seed and Dan Cochrane beat two seeds

The top 100 upsets by the juniors has cheered up an otherwise dissapointing day in terms of seniors, though the bigger upsets came in the girls IMO.

Shame for Chris Simpson to narrowly miss out though I guess!

Gabb was just walking off the court as I got there, so unfortunately I missed the biggest upset. Good to see he can compete with and beat the top players.

Lewis and Robert must have won the play-offs. Tough to pick up 4 of the top 5 seeds as opponents. Kudla, whose favourite surface is grass, should certainly test Luke's progress if he has recovered from whatever caused him to pull out of s'Hertogenbosch

Roehampton provides a good opportunity for the boys in particular to net wins over high-ranked players not used to grass. Last year there were 8 and the previous year 7. The real test is taking advantage to make it through to the quarter-finals where big points are to be had. Last year no-one made it past round 3.  Kyle's win is extremely impressive considering his age though.
