RE: Week 22 - ITF ($50K) - Nottingham, Grass

Anyway, given Naomi professes to really like playing on grass I hoped she might put in a really good performance.

Neither Anne or Naomi have really been in great form coming in but hopefully here this was more Anne being good than Naomi bad.

In any event, as has sometimes been discussed before for matches, a score like 6 - 2  6 - 2  can actually have been tighter and more of a fighting performance from the loser than you might think.  It can also ( and more often ) be a very comfortable win throughout for the winner.

Anyway, be interesting to hear how both players played from anyone that saw the match.

Followed it on live score and Anne won very comfortably. Naomi had 2bps at the beginning of the match which weren't taken and then Anne took over and won without being tested.

Having watched a brief clip of Naomi playing in her first round match, together with reading various reports about that match it is clear Naomi is struggling at the moment. Anne is playing solidly at the moment but without the spark that got her into the top 50.

To be honest I'm quite impressed Katie pushed her to a tb, Carly could hardly be better suited to grass and if she was serving like she was against Lisa, must be pretty much unbreakable. Katie doesn't like coming forward, and she would need to to beat Carly, methinks.

Phil, i think those are some pretty big assumptions to make from following live scores. I don't think Naomi's playing badly, it's just that her forehand and to a certain extent volleying seem to be a bit of a weak spot in her game at the minute - I'm not sure that's ever not been the case tho, has it? Anne has no real weaknesses, so it's not surprising to be beaten by such a player when you have some yourself.

Oh dear   cry       Wasn't expecting great things but would have hoped that Katie would have got past Gullickson.

I'm sure if you asked Naomi herself she would accept that she is not playing at her best at the moment. She is a better player now than she was 12 months ago but her results aren't. She appears to be struggling with her movement at the moment and she is just slapping her forehand.

On the contrary, I would say she is using far too much topspin on her forehand - a flatter 'slap' is just what she needs! However, you may well be right, we don't really have enough information to tell either way.

Katie continues to struggle to find her best tennis so we will have to rely on Anne and Bally for the rest tournament. Bally surely a big favourite to win the tournament assuming her back holds up.

What I meant is that she is not generating enough power through the forehand and that may mean less top spin as you say.

Another straightforward victory I would expect. Anne's match in the balance.
