Girls: Montenegro Open - Grade 4 (Week 20)

Eleanor Dean made her long-awaited debut on the junior ITF circuit this week, unusually after her first senior tournaments. It's a case of so far so good, with 6 straight sets wins in qualifying and main draw.

R1 (L32)

(Q) Eleanor Dean (GBR) d. (3) Nina Nagode (SLO) 7-6(4) 6-4

R2

(Q) Eleanor Dean (GBR) d. (Q) Michaela Jirsakova (CZE) 6-4 7-5

QF

(Q) Eleanor Dean (GBR) d. (5) Karolina Pondusova (SVK) 6-3 6-4

SF

(Q) Eleanor Dean (GBR) v Vladica Babic (MNE)

i guess it turned out to be less a case of Nina Nagode and more a case of Nina No-good

Eleanor maintains her run of sets to make the final on her debut. Something has to give tomorrow as the top seed has been equally impressive, dropping no more than a handful of games in each match

SF

(Q) Eleanor Dean (GBR) d. Vladica Babic (MNE) 6-4 6-2

Final

(1) Gabriela Pantuckova (CZE) v (Q) Eleanor Dean (GBR)

Has Eleanor ever played Katy Dunne at any level? Who is generally as the better prospect out of the two of them?

They played in the 14s nationals final last August with Eleanor winning in three sets. Eleanor is touted as a bigger prospect than Katy I think, or at least I consider her a bigger prospect. Both are exciting though, if you ask me.

I'd expect that junior Wimbledon wild cards will be given to both.

Eleanor certainly seems to enjoy the clay which is a good sign.

Well done Eleanor clap.gif

Extremely impressive to win your first Grade 4 as a 14 year old without dropping a set.

Great stuff from Eleanor.

Really good see her kicking off her ITF junior career like this following her recent impressive performances in 10K seniors matches.

It certainly is - I just had a quick run through the ITF rankings for 1996 girls who have won tournaments:

Indy De Vroom (101) has won a G2 and 2xG4
Barbara Hass (190) has won a G4 and 2xG5
Ashley Barty (540) has won a G4
6 others have won G5s.

None of them played qualifying though, let alone through all 3 rounds, and only one of the G5 winners did it on debut.

Eleanor's ranking should be around the 800 mark, but probably not for long...

I wonder what her grass court game is like.
If its comparable with her clay court game I think she deserves a crack at junior wimbledon either into qualifying or maybe main draw as an outside bet.
