Week 19 - ATP Masters 1000 - Madrid

L32: (3) Andy Murray WR 4 v Pablo Cuevas (URU) WR 57 or Qualifier

Andy has a 1-0 H2H v Cuevas, having thrashed him 2, 3 & 0 at the 2007 US Open.

The other seeds in this quarter are (14) Querrey, (9) Ferrer & (8) Cilic and he is in the same half as Fed, avoiding Rafa who is the no, 2 seed now that Nole has withdrawn.

Andy should reach quarters.  If he reaches the last 16 he meets one of Hanescu / Andreev / qualifier / Querrey

Potential quarter final v Ferrer ( again ) or Cilic would really show where Andy is at, hopefully more progression after the more promising displays in Rome.

It will be Chela for Andy's first opponent. Cuevas retired after only 2 games this morning.

The H2H is 4-1 in Andy's favour, with Chela having won only the first encounter back in 2006. Their last meeting was on the clay of Roland Garros last year, which Andy won 6-2 6-2 6-1. I'm not expecting such an easy match this time, as last year Andy was in really good form and Chela was, I think, coming back from an injury lay-off.

Some interesting matches to watch here in Madrid, and not just Andy's matches! Anyone else tuning in to Rafa vs the star Ukrainian youngster Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr? 21 yr old been making massive leaps and bounds over the past year, shot up the rankings and is now the youngest player in the top 100. Fingers crossed that Andy can go a round further than he did in MC.

Well his quarter has open up a little, Andreev and Querrey have been knocked out as possible last 16 opponents, should Andy beat Chela he will either play Hanescu or a spanish qualifier who i've never heard of before

Muńoz. the Spanish qualifier, is 28 & has thus been around for a while in the lower echelons of the game, so you've obviously not been been paying too much attention to those, MS! wink

Very encouraging, some great winners. Andy thought it was his best performance for a long time. Service still below par but improved in second set.

Looking forward to next round ....

You know, if this lad could get his first serve in court more often, he'd be quite a player. . .

I thought I was going to miss this match but it started so late I was able to see it nearly all smile

Hanescu next.
