Boys & Girls: 2010 French Open preview

The entry lists are out for Roland Garros with all our top boys in the main or qualifying draw as expected. Only two of the top 10 (Fucsovics and Tomic) are missing, with Carlos Boluda-Purkiss possibly the favourite on current form. None of our alternates has a realistic chance.

In the girls list Heather Watson has opted out leaving just Laura Robson in the main draw, though Natalie Beazant and Lucy Brown have an outside chance of making the qualifying draw. Unusually 6 girls are entered in the main draw courtesy of their WTA ranking. Copa Gerdau champion Monica Puig heads the list.

Boys MD

36 Oliver Golding
41 George Morgan

Boys QD

11 Jack Carpenter
21 Ashley Hewitt
25 Tom Allen

(Boys Alts Chris Simpson, Liam Broady, Richard Gabb, James Marsalek et al)

Girls MD

33 Laura Robson

Girls QD

None

Girls Alts

16 Natalie Beazant
19 Lucy Brown
et al

Although 33rd on the junior rankings, Laura should be seeded 10th by her professional ranking of 269.

I'm unsure of how they use professional rankings in the doubles - if they take the professional doubles ranking, Laura would ranked #1, so any reasonably good partner should see them seeded there. With neither Heather or Orlik present, I wouldn't be surprised if she played with Eugenie Bouchard. Assuming she isn't busy in the main draw doubles again... :)

Laura will be seeded but her seeding position will be determined by 24th May rankings.

The same comparison table is used for doubles and singles rankings (ie Pro doubles rankings are ignored), so Laura will have an equivalent ranking of 11, added to her partner's rank to determine seeding.

Interestingly Laura has withdrawn from RG today.
Wanting more preparation time for the grass court season ?
Had enough of clay for the year ?
Finished with juniors ?
Clashing with GCSE exams ?

Laura has pulled out of Roland Garros (along with Natalie) so unless Lucy scrapes in as an alternate we will have no representative in the girls singles. Don't know the rationale behind Laura's decision.

^had enough of clay?
she only played one match on red clay.lol

on a serious note, doesnt she still have her final gcse's to do? if so, that could have been the reason. also, more prep time for the grass season.

Thought of another possiblity. Decided to take a wildcard for Birmingham tournament and so would need to practice on grass the week before that tournament.

Wild card for Birmingham....... now that would be great....... I do hope so....... could get to see a few matches there.  smilesmilesmile

I wondered if Laura had pulled out of the juniors 'cos of  a lingering wrist problem ?  Just my thoughts, I've not read anything to that effect.

I don't think its because of injury as she would had to have withdrawn before she played her doubles in Strasbourg and it would have been odd to have continued to play doubles if the wrist was still a problem.

The impression I get from her most recent interviews is that the focus has turned more to seniors.
Her short term goal being to get her ranking high enough that she can gain entry to US open qualifying without needing a wildcard which would also allow her to play one more tournament this year. She has also entered the MD at Wimbledon which makes me wonder whether she intends to play juniors there this year. Entering five separate events within a two week tournament would seem too big a commitment to me.

If she had played FO juniors on a surface which she struggles on it would also leave her with less time to practice on grass. Her exams may also have affected her plan. I just think she will play one grass tournament before Wimbledon and if she plays well the lower grade Edgbaston tournament would provide a better opportunity to win some matches.

She hasn't entered the juniors at Wimbledon, so I think phil is right.

Disappointing news - has George not recovered from the illness which kept him out of the Trofeo Bonfiglio?

According to this article Laura is likely to play qualifying at Birmingham, thus probably not needing a wildcard. Heather still finishing off her exams.
