That's what I was afraid of. Twist of fate that Del Potro should be out of action right now, else 5 would be a certainty, surely?

I really do wonder what is up recently and apparently particularly obviously today ( I didn't see the match, but some of the bare stats look really bad  ).  Certainly seems to have been a shocker.

We know he has huge talent and is so much beter than that.  You don't lose that talent so in a way the display itself is not a long term problem, you don't just lose it.  What is maybe concerning is the reasons behind it ?

As others have said he has seemed out of sorts, and it would certainly appear some thing or things are seriously effecting his tennis, whether they be personal, medical or whatever.

I really do hope that whatever it's all about, the real Andy will be back with us sooner rather than later.

As an aside, Djoko also is going through a strange phase, he's been extremely lucky not to have been getting beaten more than he has been before Oli Rochus beat him in Miami.

*groan* Everyone seems be going through an odd phase. Andy and Nole are out of whack, Rafa's still struggling a little and not back to his best, Davydenko and Del Potro are out with injuries, Gilles has been out of it for ages now, since at least April 2009, and what on earth happened to Verdasco's promising showing after January 2009?

EDIT: And whilst I'm on the topic, Jamie's been in an odd phase since goodness knows when, Wimbly 2008 I think, and most of my lower-ranked faves recently have been losing to qualifiers when they've been seeded in the main draw of tourneys!!!! disbelief What's going on in the world?! *mutters* Something in the courtside water?

andy is not as good a player as this time last year, i remember this time last year after thrashing roddick in doha he looked unbeatable, verdasco and nadal were his only loses at this point, and he had played a lot more tournaments. this year, yet to win a title,(he had 3 last year at this point). I dont know what the reasoning for the big break after aussie then not taking dubai seriously, but he is now paying for coasting in this period

Yes the Oz open final seemed to have an affect on Andy, but also I wonder if his split from Kim Sears is starting to kick in? Feeling a bit lonesome? Having second thoughts?

Also a bit worrying Andy showing no interest in the clay season not bothering to enter Barcelona or Monte Carlo...

Split? He and Kim split?! No idea at all. I don't follow Andy's private life. Not a massive surprise given their youth, but that's not say Andy couldn't be affected by it after all he was with her for quite some time and breaking up can be tough when you're young. Particularly if Kim was his first girlfriend.

Surely he has to ask for a WC for at least one of them now.  I don't think when making his schedule he expected to only win 2 full matches troughout both tournaments.  He can't need another month off already.

In some ways I don't like speculate.  But I did at the time wonder if the split that happened just before the ATP Finals effected Andy at the O2 where he was a bit moody. It is then possible he made a big effort to get himself up and ready for the Australian Open.  After that ultimate disappointment maybe a few things have gathered together in his mind and there are some signs his normal desire is not really there.

Lets just hope it is a mini slump most players go through at one time or another

Thank goodness Del Potro and DavyD are injured. There must be a reason for this slump. It reminds you that Andy's game is too fragile. He does a lot of ball hitting in a match, especially on his own serve. If he dips just a little we see the result.

Indy was quite confident of a revival here but if anything he was worse than at IW. This draw was quite tough for a second round but even so Andy was way below par.

Only Andy knows the answers for his current lack of form. Andy clearly was an obsessive tennis player before this slump living and breathing the sport 24/7 now he that he has taken the foot off the gas he is unable to compete at the same level. But don't despair assuming his desire has only been lost in the very short term this period of pain might actually be positive in the long term.

Murray: "Mentally the last few weeks I've been really poor, that's unacceptable..not been great since Australia..need to get my mind right" , oh dear, but its what we have all been thinking, not many players admit it thou

Yes as I said elsewhere, I did think he might awaken from his recent slumbers to the extent that I actually did think he could of defended his title here, but got that one wrong  hmm.gif

As you say Tennis36 it is quite upfront to admit that for whatever reasons he has mentally not been there.  Certainly it seems his whole body language has been much more from what we thought was his past. In some ways it is good that it doesn't seem anything physical, but still remains worrying.

Let's just hope he rekindles his desire and focus asap
