Boys: Banana Bowl, Brazil - Grade 1 (Week 10)

Jack Carpenter and Ashley Hewitt have augmented the British presence here. Jack takes a hit this week, with points from a Grade 1 QF dropping off. To replace them he will probably need to beat world number 3 and Australian Open champion Tiago Fernandes. Ashley has to tackle the winner of last week's Asuncion Bowl first up whilst George has a tricky match against the winner of the Ecuador Grade 2

R1 (L64)

Vasile-Alexandru Ghilea (ROU) v (13) Jack Carpenter (GBR)
Ashley Hewitt (GBR) v (7) Renzo Olivo (ARG)
Robert Carter (GBR) v (9) Juan Sebastian Gomez (COL)
Andrew Bettles (GBR) v Nick Chappell (USA)
(15) George Morgan (GBR) v Ricardo Rodriguez (VEn)

In an early match today Jack has stormed to victory. His next opponent won his home Grade 2 last month, and narrowly missed a seeding slot, so should be much tougher. Andrew and George play later on.

R1 (L64)

(13) Jack Carpenter (GBR) d. Vasile-Alexandru Ghilea (ROU) 6-0 6-3
Ashley Hewitt (GBR) v (7) Renzo Olivo (ARG) Tuesday
Robert Carter (GBR) v (9) Juan Sebastian Gomez (COL) Tuesday
Andrew Bettles (GBR) v Nick Chappell (USA) Monday
(15) George Morgan (GBR) v Ricardo Rodriguez (VEN) Monday

R2

Hugo Dellien (BOL) v (13) Jack Carpenter (GBR)

Further good news:

Andrew Bettles (GBR) d. Nick Chappell (USA) 6-1 6-3

Andrew's best win in terms of ranking (Chappell is 61) but not too surprising as his opponent was playing his first ever ITF match on clay.

(15) George Morgan (GBR) d. Ricardo Rodriguez (VEN) 6-4 2-6 6-2

Jack's route to the quarter-final may have eased thanks to the top seed losing to a very useful but not outstanding Argentinian (Facundo Mena)

Good effort from Robert against the Casablanca (Grade A) finalist. Just Ashley to go in round 1

Close but no cigar for Ashley, and Jack has followed today unfortunately. Only Robert survived the first round of doubles

R1 (L64)

(13) Jack Carpenter (GBR) d. Vasile-Alexandru Ghilea (ROU) 6-0 6-3
(7) Renzo Olivo (ARG) d. Ashley Hewitt (GBR) 3-6 6-3 7-5
(9) Juan Sebastian Gomez (COL) d. Robert Carter (GBR) 1-6 6-2 7-6(4) *
Andrew Bettles (GBR) d. Nick Chappell (USA) 6-1 6-3
(15) George Morgan (GBR) d. Ricardo Rodriguez (VEN) 6-4 2-6 6-2

* changed scoreline on ITF

R2

Hugo Dellien (BOL) d. (13) Jack Carpenter (GBR) 6-2 7-5
(14) Roberto Quiroz (ECU) v Andrew Bettles (GBR)
(15) George Morgan (GBR) v (Q) Augusto Laranja (BRA)

George's opponent has played very little junior tennis, but has won a sprinkling of Futures level maatches.

still interest in the doubles though

R2

Hugo Dellien (BOL) d. (13) Jack Carpenter (GBR) 6-2 7-5
(14) Roberto Quiroz (ECU) d. Andrew Bettles (GBR) 5-7 6-0 6-3
(Q) Augusto Laranja (BRA) d. (15) George Morgan (GBR) 6-2 6-2

Doubles QF

Carter/Flores Ruiz (GBR/PUR) v (2) Beretta/Quiroz (PER/ECU)

Robert has a good doubles record, with 3 titles last year, and this scratch pairing saw off Jack and Ashley in round 1
