Laura Robson's attempt to go one better than last year's final starts with an easy-looking draw against an Aussie wildcard. However, as Phil notes in the preview thread, her potential second round match against rising Russian star, and Mouratoglou Academy colleague, Yulia Putintseva is a real toughie. The top ranked 1995 junior scalped a top 100 player in her first WTA match.
Heather Watson has been sitting exams, so arrives in Melbourne without any warm-up matches. She starts against a Chinese girl who won over 30 consecutive matches last year, but has found the top level more challenging - Daria Gavrilova putting her firmly in her place last week at the Traralgon tournament. A rematch of the US Open final is scheduled for round 3 if both seeds progress. Here are the relevant eighths of the draw:
(11)Yulia Putintseva (RUS) v Vivien Juhaszova (SVK) Laura Robson (GBR) v (wc)Belinda Woolcoc' (AUS) Kobkanok Upapong (THA) v (wc)Abbie Myers (AUS) (8)Camila Silva (CHI) v Cristina Dinu (ROU)
