Can Andy at least equal his best performances so far in the AO last year & in 2007? His fourth-round opponent is the big Yank, John Isner (33/WR 28), who dumped out the 12th seed, Gaël Monfils, in four sets (6-1 4-6 7-6(4) 7-6(5)/2'48") earlier. Quote from Andy used in the report on the match on the AO site:
Murray will face the red-hot American, John Isner, the Auckland champion who took out Gael Monfils, in the next round. It will be a tall task for Murray, as Isner not only owns one of the tour's most feared serves, but has improved his net game and forehand a ton.
"I want to try and get through the next match,"Murray said. "Isner is playing really well. The guy is 6'9" (and) has (one of the best), if not the best, serve on the tour."
Isner's another player Andy hasn't met before, but if he can handle big Ivo... I think, I hope, he'll do it, but not without dropping a set or two this time!

I think you are over-worried about the back, stircrazy. From how I read it, the back sore and next match a challenge are really separate statements, i.e. he sees Isner as the challenge rather than any serious back problem.
He did mention a slightly sore back in his post match interview but on the Beeb video interview on their site it didn't get mentioned at all. I don't get the impression it's a real concern.
Andy has of course actually already equalled his best performance at the Aus Open by reaching the last 16. Beating Isner and reaching the QFs would be a new best at Melbourne.
Re Isner, the guy has made great strides ( literally and metaphrically ) in the game and obviously has his big serve, but from what I've seen and heard has a fair bit more to offer from the back of the court than say Karlovic. But I suspect not enough.
Andy is certainly the man to handle a big serve and certainly I see Isner's ace count dropping significantly, since it is remarkable how many big serves Andy gets a racquet too. Of couse, getting them back well is what counts and I see Andy doing enough to break a few times. It is though important that he ups his own serve given there may be less chances to break here if Isner is at his absolute serving best, so Andy cannot really afford the occasional loose service game that he does occasionally put in.
Anyway, I hope Andy keeps a positive attitude, goes after such second serve chances as he gets and keeps his focus.
Ultimately, I'd predict this as a Murray win in 3 or 4 sets.
I watched the re-run on interactive, since my overnight recording failed yet again! There is something about Freeview, interactive, and timed recordings that just doesn't seem to gel very well, on my equipment anyway.
It wasn't a match to rave about but he did well enough, and is through to the next round, which is enough by my standards. I worry more when he starts a tournament really well and you wonder if he can keep it up!
Andy has a good record against Karlovic but I have heard that Isner is a much improved version of Karlovic as he has more to his game than serves and volleys. I'm fairly confident Andy will come through to take on Rafa (or Karlovic!)
Andy plays the tall, big servers very well IMO. He is one of the best returners in the world and so good at getting the ball back and frustrating the opponent. Can see Isner getting frustrated as the match goes on...If Andy wins the firs set then it will be over in 3.
