According to Zoo Tennis, Babos has lost which should help Heather reclaim the No. 3 spot.

is there any difference between 3 and 4 in terms of direct entries next year?

cos if not, i suppose it doesnt matter too much.

What that means I think is that Heather will:

a) finish as number 2 if she wins the tournament and progresses another round in the doubles

b) finish as number 3 if she reaches the final (or wins the tournament but loses next round in the doubles)

c) finish somewhere between 3 and 5 if she reaches the semifinal (depends on Babos in doubles and Gavrilova)

d) finish 4th or 5th if she reaches the quarter-final (depends on Gavrilova)

e) finish between 4th and 6th otherwise (Gavrilova and Njiric are the two who can pass her)

The key differences are between 2 and 3 plus between 5 and 6: 3 - 5 get the same junior exempts. Otherwise it will be a matter of personal pride and possibly better sponsorship  deals

Njiric has just lost according to Zoo Tennis - so a top 5 finish is now guaranteed smile

Agreed a good effort from Jess won more games than I expected I saw Mladenovic play Heather at Barnstaple I thought Jess would struggle against her big groundstrokes much more.
Jess & Jen also were beaten in the Doubles losing to the 4th seeds 3-6 6-4 5-10

Indeed pretty good stuff from Jess.   Winning against Dolehide and being as competitive as that against Mladenovic I think is really encouraging.

I think that Jess's result stands out here the most assuming Mladenovic was anywhere near her best. Jess has really bounced back well from the double bagel and arguably shown career best form this week. Something to really build on for next year.
As for Heather she will need to get back to near her best form for round 3. Two easy matches so far don't give an indication of her form but her performances in doubles havn't been great.

I think it maybe tomljanovic next. Which Heather will do well to win.

L16: (3) Heather Watson JWR 4/WTA 559  beat  (13) Saisai Zheng (CHN) JWR 26/WTA 706    6 -1  3 - 6  6 -3

Is indeed Tomljanovic next, who Naomi Broady beat in the recent 25K Mexico final  7 - 6  6 - 3.  That performance by the Croat 16 yo, when added to other very decent senior results took her close to the top 300 in the senior rankings.

QF :   (3) Heather Watson JWR 4/WTA 559 v (6) Ajla Tomljanovic (CRO) JWR 10/WTA 304

I think it will probably need Heather near her best to have a decent chance of winning this match,  and I don't think she has been on her best form the last 2 weeks.

I'm afraid I'm not too optimistic.  But I'd love to be proved wrong.
