RE: Boys: Dunlop Orange Bowl, Miami, USA: Grade A (Week 49)

Some great wins there, heopfully they can all keep going.

These 3 look like the guys who'll be making the waves for team GBR in the junior GS next year.

There's a bit more detail on the three British wins on the Orange Bowl website. George's comments about doing enough to get in the Australian Open (I assume he means main draw) are questionable. The cut this year was 101 (based on pre Jan 1 rankings) and George needs another win to be ranked around that figure, though his current projected ranking of around 120 next week has often been good enough in the past
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Six of the eight seeds who did take the court wont be taking it again after a string of stirring upsets Wednesday. British juniors Oliver Golding, Jack Carpenter and George Morgan did most of the damage, eliminating a trio of top-10 seeds in three-set matches.

Morgan, a qualifier who won the 2007 Junior Orange Bowl Boys 14s title, disposed of the German Krawietz in style, hitting a cross-court forehand winner, an inside-out forehand winner and an ace out wide in the final three points of his 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 victory.

I think it helped me a lot to have played a lot more tennis than him, said Morgan. Its tough to be in qualies but you get belief after qualifying and winning a couple rounds. My goal was to get into the Australian Open next year and that should be enough ranking points to get me through.

Krawietz didnt take kindly to defeat, bashing his Wilson racquet into the purple hard court four times after his last service game, and then kicking over an on-court chair as he exited Court D.

Though No. 4 seed Marton Fucsovics didnt resort to any unsportsmanlike conduct, the effects of the heat were evident in his play during the latter stages of his 7-6, 1-6, 6-1 loss to Carpenter.

Fucsovics barely moved as he missed a pair of backhand volleys to surrender his final two service games.

Victory was especially sweet for Carpenter, who lost to Fucsovics in the Eddie Herr semifinals last week.

It was so hot out there, said Carpenter. The first set was tough and once I went 3-Love, double-break down in the second, I started to think about the third. Its so humid and you lose so much fluid. He was obviously struggling.

Rounding out the British coup was Golding, who defeated No. 9 Tiago Fernandes of Brazil, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Among Goldings supporters outside Court A was Andy Murray, who trains in Miami during the professional off-season and must have been pleased with what he saw.

With the boys, there are a lot of talented players, said Morgan. We seem to be coming through.

Thanks for that David.
I wonder how many of our juniors will be heading down under come January.

Suprised we have no results yet. Matches started at 2pm gmt.

Let's hope no news is good news.

Crap.
Was hoping for one winner at least. Oh well. Still pretty good stuff overall.

Edit:Yes, all very annoying scorelines.

L16: Jack Carpenter JWR 85/ATP 1664 lost to Johannes Robert van Overbeek (USA) JWR 89/ATP 954 4-6 6-2 5-7
L16: (Q) George Morgan JWR 190 lost to (15) Sekou Bangoura (USA) JWR 58/ATP 1272 6-4 2-6 6-7(6)
L16: Oliver Golding JWR 83/ATP 1711 lost to (5) Mitchell Frank (USA) JWR 18 5-7 5-7

Disappointing end, but the last two weeks have shown that we now have juniors who can compete regularly with the best. After a year when no-one reached top 50 we can look forward to a much stronger 2010, with two starting in the top 50.

It is a real pity that at least one couldn't have got through to the QFs, especially when all the matches were pretty close affairs.

But in the grand scheme of things this looks to be a very encouraging week.  I would suggest that it has reaped quite a number of unexpected wins and showed real competitiveness.

To have 2 guys in the top 50 from the start of next year, and Ollie in particular not that far past his 16th birthday, is encouraging of good things to come. There also seems a decent strength in depth, particularly in the 93 boys.

A good week I'd say  smile

The main report on the day's play at the tournament website relates to British "upstarts" being beaten so they have certainly made an impression, although I think it was more the Gators angle that made the first 2 matches top news.

George seems to have been particularly unlucky, having a match point but also saving four with some good play.  Jack also saved two match points in his match before subcoming to a third to stop that match from also going to a final set tiebreak.  Ollie missed out on six set points in the second set of his match.

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. The University of Florida may not be playing for a national championship on the football field, but two future Gators remain contenders for an international tennis title at the Dunlop Orange Bowl. With Coach Andy Jackson looking on, Bob Van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Sekou Bangoura (Bradenton, Fla.) upended a pair of British upstarts to reach the Boys 18s quarterfinals at Crandon Park Thursday.

Its good for Florida, said Bangoura, who, like Van Overbeek, will enroll at UF in January. We actually warmed up today, so well probably do that again. Get that good karma going.

Big-hitting Brit George Morgan made the first set a nightmare for Bangoura, crushing cross-court forehands on consecutive points to break the Americans serve for the third time and take a 5-4 lead. The 16-year-old qualifier consolidated by brushing a down-the-line backhand at 30-30 on his serve and then converting his first set point when a Bangoura lob landed long.

Bangoura bounced back to take the second set and had two match points on his serve at 5-3 in the third. But Morgan rallied to 5-5.

With momentum now in Morgans favor, Bangoura saved a break point in the 11th game by running down the Brits killer cross-court forehand and drawing an error. When he held with a service winner down the tee, the typically subdued Sekou screamed, Lets go!

Bangoura reached 15-40 on Morgans serve in the following game, earning his third and fourth match points. But the Brit remained calm and erased them with an unreturnable serve and a down-the-line backhand that Bangoura couldnt retrieve. Unafraid to venture forward, Morgan stepped inside the baseline for a backhand volley winner and a cross-court forehand winner to force a final set tiebreak.

It was getting really annoying, actually; Im not going to lie, said Bangoura. It was the second time I had match points, and he came up with great shots. All credit to him. What could I do?

After saving four match points, it was Morgan who earned the first match point of the tiebreak, leading 6-5 with Bangoura due to serve.

The American missed his first serve and spun in his second, which allowed Morgan to rip a forehand return. Though Bangoura anticipated the ball up the line, Morgan appeared to be in a winning position when he approached the net.

But the American blasted a cross-court backhand pass that drew a short volley, which he attacked with a forehand directed down the middle of the court. Morgan managed to make a reflex volley, but when Bangouras next forehand went towards his body again, he failed to put a racquet on the ball.

At 6-6, Morgan missed a return off a second serve. Facing a fifth match point, he ended a baseline rally prematurely with a drop shot that dribbled off the net and back onto his side of the court, ending a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory for Bangoura in two hours and 50 minutes.

It could have gone either way, said Bangoura. Im just going to go rest up and be ready tomorrow, fight like today and see what happens.

Van Overbeek nearly found himself in a final-set tiebreak during his round of 16 win over Morgans training partner, Jack Carpenter. Serving at 5-6, 30-30, in the third set, Carpenter missed a backhand to give the American a match point. Engaged in a baseline rally, it was the Brit who pulled the trigger on an inside-out forehand that Van Overbeek could not handle.

Carpenter made another backhand error at deuce to give Van Overbeek a second match point. But with a look at a second-serve return, Van Overbeek missed a backhand of his own.

On deuce No. 2, Carpenter attempted a drop shot that bounced backwards off the top of the tape. Facing a third match point, Carpenter serve-and-volleyed. The Americans backhand return landed at Carpenters feet, forcing him to hit a half-volley that Van Overbeek pummeled for a down-the-line forehand that Carpenter couldnt handle.

The first match point I played way too tentative, said Van Overbeek. On the second one, I wanted to be more aggressive on the return and pushed it a little bit wide. Then on the last one, I didnt know he was going to serve-and-volley because he only had on a couple big points.

Luckily for me, I was hitting my returns as short as possible not on purpose. I dont know if serving-and-volleying was the right play because I wasnt returning great.

In other Boys 18s action, No. 5 seed Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.) saved six set points in the second set of his 7-5, 7-5 win over Oliver Golding. Goldings loss made British boys 0-3 in the round of 16, a day after he, Carpenter and Morgan each upset a top-10 seed.

Judging from the reports on the end of Morgan and Carpenter's matches, Muzza's main contribution to today was teaching George and Jack how to do his trademark dodgy droppers! ashamed
