Boys & Girls: Canadian Open Junior Championships - Grade 1 (Week 35)

This strong lead-up tournament to the US Open, won by Marcus Willis last year, has live Internet TV coverage of the semis and finals. Oliver Golding quickly returned to action successfully following his defeat in the final of the US Junior International Hard Court tournament to Sekou Bangoura. His reward is a crack at the Brazilian who retired from last week's tournament opening Olly's path to the final.

Laura Robson's protracted stay in New York forced  her to withdraw, and Steph Cornish was an early casualty, losing to her doubles partner.

Ahmed El Menshawy (GBR) v (WC) Panev Jha (CAN)

Has Golding just emerged as a talent in the last 12 months or have there always been high expectations from an early age ?

Olly has always had precocious talent - it has just been a case of in what arena he applies himself. He's had a Wikipedia entry for a long while, which covers both his early acting and tennis careers. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Golding

Something which will need to be added to his Wiki page is that this week he has debuted in the top 100 (at 87) making him the first British 15 year-old in the top 100 since Andy Murray

So this success is not unexpected. Hopefully he can build on it next year. One minor note of caution I would put forward is that he seems to have played alot of tournaments this year both junior and senior and he could probably do with a break in the near future. Compared to George Morgan who I very rarely see playing tournaments week in week out.

Ollie lost in singles 3 and 6, but is in doubles semis, don't know what that could mean for any hopes of qualifying for us open juniors?

The way I am looking at the rules, and that's probably wrongly, if Ollie and Ahmed reach the doubles final and neither Jha or Sariemento reach the singles SF and David/King don't reach the doubles final, then they get SE's.

Not sure if Ollie can get a SE though as he is only on the alternates list and not the qualifying list.

The 1993's look like a decent group with Ollie, Andrew Bettels and George Morgan. Heres hoping they can keep the good things going.

Doubles SF

El Menshawy/Golding (GBR) v Kandath/Sarmiento (USA)

I think this match will hold the key to the SEs. There are no other ATP/ITF events in the region which would qualify someone for an SE, but singles is usually given priority over doubles. As Wolf indicates Sarmiento and Jha are the two unseeded players left in the Boys Singles. However Jha is not a factor, as he is not on the US Open Qualifying list. Sarmiento currently has a main draw WC, but I think that can still be converted into an SE.

Regardless of Sarmiento's status there will be at least one other SE on offer, and both Kandath plus Ahmed are down for US Open qualifying, so I expect whoever of the two is on the winning side to be offered one (no-one in the other doubles semi is eligible). Olly's chances seem to depend on Sarmiento losing both matches before the US Open sign-in closes this evening, and there being enough withdrawals since Tuesday's last update for Olly to be accepted for qualifying. I had missed the fact that, as Wolf says, you need to be on the qualifying list to be considered for an SE. The final slim chance for a main draw place is if the USTA can be persuaded to award him the last WC.

As a PS I have just spotted on the host website that Sarmiento and Jha both lost their singles today, so the SEs should be all down to the doubles match
