Walk in the park this tourny for Flembo

The Knight wrote:

i think Bloomers might have something to say about that

I meant so far, of course Flembo will face tougher opponents and i'm sure Bloomers will give him a decent run for his money

So can anyone give me the story on Dominic Inglot then?

I'm assuming that Tom Burn is coaching and travelling with some youngsters (he played in the doubles with Oliver Evans) and playing for fun/expenses/keeping up to date with current standards rather than relaunching his own career?

Inglot and Burn both used to be regulars on the pro tour a few years ago before leaving to be coaches. Whether or not this is a one off return tourney I don't know.

Burn got to 600ish I believe but bt.net members who saw him in tourneys said he didn't have the weapons to get higher. Inglot didn't have as much success but got some points and has been a very good county player for a while, partnering Slabba in county week.

Bit of a **** day for watching tennis really, rain meant that I only saw about 2hrs of play in total. The sensible move from the organisers would have been to put all the matches indoors at the NTC from 11am when the rain started, that way any spectators (and there were a few of us) would have a chance to see as many matches as possible.

Instead from 2pm they started sending matches off to the NTC to be played indoors 1 at a time started with Burn-Insauti. This gave the dilemma, to stay at the Cumberland club and hope from a prolonged period of play or head to the NTC (quite a long tube journey away) and risk only seeing 1 match.

Unfortunately Josh and I made the fatal error of staying at the Cumberland Club, if we'd gone then to the NTC we'd have seen the day's shock upsets.

Some very pleasant & some unpleasant surprises today, but I guess that, on balance, the pleasant outweigh the unpleasant!

Quarter-finals:

Dominic Inglot UNR vs Andrew Anderson (RSA) WR 882
Tom Burn UNR vs (5) Toshihide Matsui (JPN) WR 551
(8) Barry King (IRL) WR 688 vs (4) Richard Bloomfield WR 472
(6) Colin O'Brien (IRL) WR 642 vs (2) Colin Fleming WR 437

Thanks for the bios - I imagine the club/organisers were probably hoping for good breaks in the weather so they'd get some play today - but it must have been a complete pain waiting out the showers all pm! I've been watching Marat Safin get thumped again in a GS first round - really sad way for such an entertaining player to end his GS career.

As for what we did see:

Fleming looked the class act of the day and with Niland out, I can't see anyone else winning this tournament. Moves well from the back of the court, plenty of weapons and a really varied game, he gets a lot more bite from the backhand slice than most players at this level. He seems committed to a strategy of attacking the net whenever possible and this shows just how good his volleying is. Credit to him, Pauffley made it very difficult at times early on with a lot of great low returns.

Pauffley had a lot of break point chances but took none of them and once he fell a break behind he lost his way. Likes to get the first strike in after the serve and can really tee off on the forehand (can see why he did well on the grass at Ikley) but too many errors to trouble Fleming.

Fleming is quite a perfectionist, looks majorly pissed off with himself when he misses any volley. Got wound up with the umpire over a number of the serve calls too (fair enough they can be shocking at this level).

Bloomfield should make the semis but to beat Fleming he'll have to play a lot better. Seems to be struggling with some sort of injury, he was treated on court by the trainer for 10min before the warm-up even started and seemed to be limping a bit afterwards.

Unsurprisingly Bloomfield looked a bit flat-footed at times and didn't serve particularly well by his standards (though its not easy on a slowish hard court). Made heavy weather of beating the Zimbabwe player, was cruising in the first set but gave the break away before breaking again at 4-4. 2nd set was more straightforward when the rain wasn't falling. Was getting a bit narked with the line calling at times.

Oliver Evans looked like a good junior player but a little out of his depth at this level. He was up against experienced pro Barry King who like all Irish players is super-solid, nothing big but he doesn't miss and will stay out there all day. Evans wasn't able to construct the points on a regular basis and lacked a bit of pace on his shots at times. Got frustrated in horrible conditions in set 2 and smashed a ball out of court.

Colin O'Brien is a solid leftie player, looks to work the points with heavy topspin forehand and that weapon gave him the edge against the grinder Bains. Bains was a break up in the 1st set but O'Brien turned it around. Bains probably lost the match just after the 1st rain delay, he took 3 games to get into the match and in that time he'd lost the 1st set and was a break down in the 2nd. Some really strange grunting from Bains, sounded like he was being roughed up but it wasn't working.

A couple of other amusing points:

I got there in my tracksuit, was a bit worried about the rain so asked the referee if it was going to be all indoors. He said not to worry, informed me I was first on court and if my match was going to be moved indoors there'd be an announcement biggrin.gif

So wish I had my racket bag, could have taken my place in the 2nd round of a 10K, maybe taken on Fleming rofl.gif

For most of the matches that were moved to the NTC, the tournament organised a minibus to take the players there. However when it came to O'Brien-Bains, the referee told Bains to get the tube and find his own way there. Bains didn't know where the NTC was to the referee's amazement, (apparently he got chucked out of the LTA fold before it was built) so he got given directions on where to go on the Piccadily Line !

2 brilliant stories from the day! Can't believe that Bains got told to take the tube! LMFAO!

Only one doubles result of any real consequence today:

Richard Bloomfield & Barry Fulcher UNR beat Daniel Glancy & Barry King (IRL/IRL) UNR by 3 & 5 biggrin

They play the fourth seeds, Andrew Gregory & Riccardo Maiga (AUS/SUI) WR 2228, in the SF in the bottom half of the draw. pray.gif
