He had to hang in there for large parts of this match and guts it out. He looks very happy as he goes over to his camp. And he has the decency to inquire of DP whether his shoulder is ok. Also he does a favour to Andy Roddick fans by preventing DP from going 5th in the rankings.
Not the best match ever (to put it mildly) and didn't really ever get going for long periods, but Murray just about managed to do enough to get the win.
Second set tiebreak decided the match, and Murray played his best tennis in the tiebreak, and having won that, it was never in doubt that he wouldn't win the match.
Del Potro just ran out of energy in the end which could partly be down to having played the night match two days in a row and having played Washington last week, but also due to Murray having the superior fitness.
Great to see Murray get another 1000 series event and one where he didn't really produce his best tennis all week, except for the Ferrero match.
Would think Murray has a decent shot to retain his Cincinnati title if he can play well, but going to be tough to win them back to back, but looks good a good bet for the US Open.
Not many hanging around for the presentation. DP gets a rather odd, somewhat phallic looking runner's up trophy. Andy gets a cheque which could comfortably buy him a 2-bedroom flat in Brighton. He has a kind word for DP, they share a smile and look quite chummy for a second or two. And that about concludes proceedings.
Perfect start to the US hard court swing. Still want to see Andy play a more aggressive game. Not a great fan of Del Potro but do think he's a good player and will always be a threat to Andy. Pleased to see the friendly 'hug' at the end of the match and Andy sounds quite confident giving his winner's speech these days.
I was pretty worried until near the end of the second set.
Bet Delpo doesn't play Washington next year! Either that, or he needs to get fitter, one of the two. However, kudos to him for not retiring when it was obvious he had nothing left in the tank - I suspect Djoker would have thrown in the towel.
Del Potro does look like he will be a threat to the top 4/5 from now on, but I just cannot get interested in watching him play.
Hopefully he and Murray won't have too many big matches against each other but they are not the best/most exciting matches to watch, but Murray does have the game to cause him problems...but Del Potro, if everything worked for him, has the game to blow Murray off the court.
