Boys: AEGON Scottish Junior International Wk 1, Edinburgh - Grade 5 (Week 27)


The first of two weeks here, sees a large British contingent, with 1993 boys James Ireland and Robert Carter amongst the seeds, and 1995 boy Clay Crawford aiming to build on the impressive start to his junior career.

The first round was completed today, with Clay Crawford giving a w/o. There was a tight contest between James Ireland and Juan Carlos Ferrero Academy student Tom Gutteridge - the former shading three 7-5 sets. All the results on the above link.

Into the QF's we have 5 players reamining

Robert Carter (7) who plays number 1 seed Havaj
(3) Robin Goodman who will play a Pakistani
WC Lloyd Grasspool (who beat the German number 5 seed) will play 4th seed Brit James Ireland
Qualifier Jonathan Brooklyn (who beat 2nd seed Westgate in R2) will play 6th seed Frenchman

Wow, didn't know Gutteridge was playing over in Spain now. I played him in a student competition last year. He beat me pretty comfortably but I'm surprised his taking it that seriously. He must be younger than he looked!

The singles resolves into a couple of Anglo-French semis, with both French boys in ominously good form, yet to drop a set in singles or doubles

The boys prevented a French clean sweep:

In the Tennis Europe Category 3 event also held here top seed Shakeel Manji, our highest ranked 1996 boy, prevailed, beating Alex Sendegeya (who was discussed at length in a previous thread) in the semis.
