Wimbledon - Round 4: Andy vs Stanislas Wawrinka

Have just checked Monday's OOP and guess what Andy's match is scheduled for...

...3rd Match on Centre Court after Federer and Safina.

Another 3 set victory I hope. I dare say I could get used to the sense of anti-climax that Andy currently brings to his matches as he hasn't really been tested at all since he moved to the green stuff 8 matches ago.

Head-to-Head is 4-3 in Andy's favour with the last meeting at the 2008 US Open where Andy won 1,3 & 3

Wawrinka is a good player, but hasn't got any grass court record to speak of and having played Schwank, Vassallo and Levine so far, not got any idea if he has suddenly become a bit of a force on the surface or not (but having been a set and break down to Levine, who needed five sets to beat Cuevas, probably not)

On a clay court I'd think Wawrinka would have a good chance of beating Murray, but on any other surface, Murray is the big favourite to get the win.

Murray in 3 sets again, although having been pushed closer than he has in his last two matches.

(And with Simon, who has not looked that great all week or Ferrero, who Murray was untroubled against at Queens, in the last eight, the draw continues to open up for Murray...to be honest though, this has been one of the nicest draws that he could possibly have got)

I was afraid that the schedulers would feel obliged to give Andy ONE match off Centre Court. But no, he is on there, and I will be there!

I'm so thrilled - I have supported him since 2004 and never seen him play live!

Yes, I did kind of expect either his 3rd or 4th round match to go to Court One.

I guess keeping Super Saturday match on Centre made sense, so then especially since everyone from the whole draw plays on Monday, I thought mm maybe his 4th round match.

But it looks like Centre Court all the way.

Hey, England won a World Cup not having to play anywhere else but Wembley, so maybe Andy can win Wimbledon not having to play away from Centre Court  smile

Will they schedule 2 matches before the final for Centre Court if he goes all the way ?   Don't want to spoil Andy's routine  biggrin

Re, Wawrinka I had the pleasure being there to see Andy demolish Stan in the last 16 of the US open 1, 3 and 3 with a really fine performance. Stan is just not really challenging Andy on grass either unless something very strange happens. 3 sets for me with at most one being tight.

I believe that Andy has payed simething like 14 matches at Wimbledon. His first match against Bastl was on No1 Court. Ever since then he has played on Centre Court.

I know he is British but that does seem a bit over the top. I see they have put Djokovic on No3 court tomorrow. I wonder what he has done to upset the powers that be!

The Bastl match was on Court 2 and the Stepanek match on Court 1, but he may well have played every match since on Centre Court. The only reason Nole has been shunted out to Court 3 tomorrow is because it's the one day when the whole of the men's draw and the whole of the women's draw play, so there is more competition than usual.

Oh thank god for that. Talk about being on edge. So glad he won and hopefully he will beat Ferrero next and i'll get to see him live on Friday on centre court. Can't wait.

KEEP GOING ANDY.

I am a wreck....hands are still shaking...what a bloody match...even better than Gasguet last year !

Just so mentally strong...his serve deserted him a bit...needs to serve better. Will walk his QF IMO. The SF match that will be the next big test !

What a match! I was worried after the 2nd set that Andy was too pumped up with adrenaline and would suffer a big dip later on. Thank goodness he was fit enough (just) to see it out.

WELL DONE Andy.

Was Madeline due to be there today? I wonder how she survived without cushions or a defibrilator.

Terrible display. So lucky that Wawrinka froze on many of the break points in the 2nd and 3rd sets. A performance to forget and move on. Hopefully he can crush Ferrero and be fresh enough for the semis. I could understand the nervous start but very surprised that he let his level drop in the 4th set and then gave away his 3-0 lead in the fifth. Wawrinka will be kicking himself for not winning that match because Andy was there for the taking.

Great drama and some amazing points but he shouldn't be giving Stan so many chances on grass. Nowhere near enough unreturned serves and aces for a five set match.

Anyway, he won so that's something.

Or WOW!!!!!!!!!!

His serve completely deserted him and he still managed to find a way to win. Brad Gilbert would have been so proud...

Some of the angles they were finding were ridiculous.

(I'm glad Mad was able to be there so the switch from Beeb 2 to Beeb 1 won't have affected her/you tonight. Looking forward to the match report to end them all!)

Yes!! Finally coming down off the ceiling biggrin

What an immense performance from both men - I don't know if it was just because Stani was playing out of his skin but he seemed to get to everything (Muzza/Rafa style), as if he had learnt a lot from all their practice sessions together and was able to anticipate Andy's shots more than most players manage to do.

They both seemed to have a clear game plan at the start - Stani's to go for all his shots, Muzza's to soak up the pressure until Stani stopped making those shots and to give him a reminder that he was playing the no. 3 in the world when he needed to.

Both game plans more or less worked, though I wonder whether Andy could have won a bit more quickly had he taken the game to Wawrinka a bit more and really made him feel the heat. We'll never know, of course, and maybe it wasn't even possible - after all, Wawrinka's serving tonight was amazing and many of his shots would have been enough to put any player on the back foot.

Anyway, we always knew he'd have at least one really tough match in the second week, where he wasn't quite on (in particular, his serving wasn't on) and the other player was - hopefully this was it, and he's done the important thing, i.e. got through. Plus he's probably got the crowds revved up for the rest of the week now!
Having finished even later than against Gasquet last year, I hope he recovers in time for the QF (not least because I have a 2nd row CC ticket for Friday!) - I was knackered at the end of that, so goodness knows how he feels, no doubt with hours of press conference and physio to go before he can go to bed.

I think he will recover in time. He has three things in his favour over last year:

- he's much fitter generally
- he didn't pump himself up quite as much tonight as he did last year
- best of all, he doesn't have to play Rafa!

So, 'only' three former grand slam champions and world no. 1s to beat probably (the other three players in his half of the draw match that description and Fed in the lower half) if he wants the title. And you thought this evening was tough ...

Wow , wow, wow  !!  How happy am I that Andy came through that, but I needed an hour to calm down afterwards.

Stan played much better than I expected, hugely better than in their meeting in the US Open last 16. Quite clearly, as has been said, Andy's serve was down a few levels from his previous 2 matches, and as I said in one of the other match threads, his serve working well to me gives him confidece in his all round game, particularly on grass.

To me, Stan played to the top of his form, expecially given it was on grass, Andy was some way off his top form. Those 2 combined for the strange happenings lol that I hadn't anticipated, and the result was 5 set drama. Yes, he could have lost but he didn't and he was the one victorious in the end.

Terrible performance ?  I guess all things are relative.  Certainly not a Wimbledon Championship winning performance, but Wimbledon Champions have been invoved in epics when they played some way off their best even in the 2nd week, and come through that match thrillingly and gone on from there.  Terrible is most certainly not the word I would have used.

Anyway, he did win in the end, and that's one hell of a big something from my point of view.  I don't actually think it will do him any great harm to have had such a match after all semed so easy in his previous 2 matches.

I have always made Federer favourite for the title ( I like to go out on a limb lol ), and still do, but I am confident Andy can get back to the standard of his 2 previous very unterrible performances ( admittedly against weaker opposition ) and make the final at least.
