Typical! Enters the doubles, thereby depriving bona fide doubles players the chance of a decent run in a Slam, only to pull out when it suits him.
I'll second that: my sentiments exactly when I noticed the walkover this afternoon!
The fact Acasuso and Gonzalez have reached the quarter finals perhaps says something about the quality of the doubles players in the draw.
Apparantely he pulled out because he didn't want to pick up an injury in the doubles given that this may be his best chance to win a slam, which to me sounds like a perfectly acceptable reason to pull out of the doubles, as it's always going to be second in importance to singles.
Presumably he checked with Acasuso first to make sure it was okay if they pulled out and he said yes.
If Gonzo had played doubles yesterday and picked up an injury that meant he had to give Murray a walkover, everyone would be saying how stupid he was for playing doubles (a bit like Monaco in Vina del Mar last year when he got injured in the doubles final with the singles final the following day and had to give a walkover, missed three months, and has never again found the form he had at the time), so in this situation, you can't really win.
That said, Tommy Robredo is playing his doubles quarter final today against the Bryan Brothers, and he and Marc Lopez have taken them to a third set, having been a break down in the second set.
Andy gets to 0-30 on the Gonzalez serve but some big forehands peg it back to 30-30. Murray messes up a second serve return and a big backhand from Gonzo finishes off the game.
Gonzo takes charge of the first rally but hits long for 15-15. Murray slips to 15-30 with some unconvincing rallying but pulls it back to 30-30, with a little help from a dodgy bounce. Gonzo dominates the next rally, Muzza lobbing smashing chances for him - but Gonzo nets, and Murray serves out the game.
Big inside-out forehand puts Gonzo 0-15 up - and Murray misses an easy put-away to slip to 0-30. A nice drop shot puts Andy back in it at 15-30 and he gets away with a weak volley to get to 30-30. Double fault leaves Andy with another break point to save. Murray plays a poor approach shot and Gonzalez gets the break.
