RE: Dubai 500 - Andy v Stakhovsky

Stak was serving so it would have been 2 double faults required

The reason is that his ankle popped. I tihnk it was a fair enough retirement to be honest

Grr, my computer crashed during the first game of the last set furious.gif  It really doesn't seem to like me having anything else open when playing a livestream.

So Andy won the battle of the dodgy ankles. It was a slight problem in Rotterdam, wasn't it? Hopefully it will be overcome as it was there.

I don't much like the retirement with a possible only two points left to play. Stak must think 5-3 ret sounds a lot better than 6-3.

It no doubt was a genuine injury, but it could surely have lasted another two points. Contrast with Rafa in the Rotterdam final who could hardly move at the end but played it out.

I dont blame Stak one bit for stopping when he did, only he knows how severe it was - and in any case why risk completely knackering his ankle as serving puts the most strain on limbs, if he had served underarm he would have been criticised even more.
Meanwhile, Andy has said that his ankle should be OK for the next round - what about the DC Andy?

Stakhovsky was playing so well for much of the match and as it was clear his ankle injury was become more of a problem for him as time went on. I am wondering if Andy, with his own ankle problem to worry about, would have got through this one had Stakhovsky not hurt himself early on.

I hope Andy's ankle will be better for Wednesday. If he's fit, there is no reason he shouldn't make the final this week. Thereafter, a battle between himself and Djokvic seems likely, those that all depends on if Novak is having an on week or an off one.

Maybe so. I think what I have failed to communicate is that he actually went over on it again during the point immediately before the retirement.

From his point of view why risk 2 more points where he could damamge it further?

Did he really? I didn't see that, and the livestream didn't give a replay like they had of the first time. In that case, maybe he was right - though he wasn't hobbling as he went to the net to shake hands, so I still think he could have played two more points.

Whatever - still a win for Andy.
