0-15 - Gicquel on the run and he plays a dropshot which Murray gets to, and Gicquel nets the bh pass 15-15 - Murray nets the fh on the run 30-15 - unreturnable serve 40-15 - nothing dropshot from Murray which Gicquel gets to easily, and he hits the bh pass 40-30 - good point from Murray and he steps in and hits a fh winner Deuce - great bh return, and Murray steps in and hits the bh winner Adv Murray - another good bh return and he steps in and puts the bh volley away Game Murray - bh return winner
Not totally surprising that Gicquel retired as he did look to be struggling a bit, and when he went two breaks down in the final set, there probably wasn't much point carrying on with an injury as he was unlikely to win and would only make the injury worse (and with a home event in Marseille next week that he probably wants to play in)
Another patchy effort from Murray as for a set and a half he looked to be playing quite well, but Gicquel's serve was keeping him in the match, but nearing the end of the 2nd set he just went off the boil and Gicquel didn't do too much to get the break.
But the 3rd set he played a lot better (although how much Gicquel was restricted may have been an issue) and seemed to be hitting top form when the retirement came.
Think he'll have to play a bit better against Ancic, but he's won another match without really playing that well, which can only be a good thing
No doubt the Murray-haters will say he only won because Gicquel was hurt, but actually I don't think that was the case. Gicquel was running like an energiser bunny after his thigh was taped, and went on to win that set.
I had the distinct impression that Andy came out for the third set having decided to move up a gear, did so, and played three very good games. The Frenchman decided he didn't have much chance from 2 breaks down and decided he had had enough.
