Rotterdam QF: Andy v Marc Gicquel

Andy and the 31 year-old Frenchman have never played each other before. Match scheduled at the same time as today's, "not before" 2.30pm local time so 1.30 here if the earlier matches don't overrun.

Gicquel doesn't have a great deal to show for his career, a bit of a journeyman really, but he must be in good form this week to have got this far. Andy should win unless he plays a real shocker!

Gicquel is definately a journeyman, but he's the kind of player we'd love to be British, as our journeymen don't crack the top 100.

Still, the fact he only cracked it a couple of years ago gives hope to all of the British players that they can do it if they keep working hard enough and get a bit of luck.

As for the match? Gicquel will be a lot more attacking than Seppi was today which should play right into Murray's hands, and another straight sets win should be in order.

Gicquel is both a journeyman and a lucky loser:  he's in the main draw only because Söderling (8) was forced to withdraw with a lower back injury! disbelief

He didn't beat Mathieu by luck though. Unless you count playing a renowned choker luck of course.

Telling statistic (jumped out at me when I looked at the OoP earlier):  of the eight players in today's quarter-finals four are Frogs! hmm

And they also have a top ten in Simon, arguably their most talented player in Gasquet, and other players such as Mathieu, Llodra and Clement who also played in this event but didn't make the quarter finals!!!

France seem to be very good at producing top 100 players, but have always struggled to produce the one who can challenge for slams, which is about the only thing over the French is tennis terms that the Brits have

I think that the real champions - the ones who win slams - aren't produced by any system they are special individuals who make their own way to the top. It just makes it easier if tennis in their country has a good pool of talent, the competition so they develop as youngsters, the coaching and the support that helps to get them there.

Mario Ancic has just reached the semi finals, dismissing Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 6-2.

So it will be Ancic in the semi's for the winner of this match - hopefully Murray.

Ancic is always one of those players who people seem to see as a dangerous floater, which in fairness he is, but he isn't the player he was before his illness as his groundstrokes have dramatically gone backwards, but his serve/volleys are still as good as ever.

Already, Murray is looking like he's playing a lot better than yesterday. He looks more interested and is playing a lot better tennis, being a lot more aggressive.

Whether that was his tactic yesterday (presume so) or just couldn't get going, I don't know
