Adequate - job done. As one of the commentators pointed out - Sampras never pushed himself in the early rounds, making do with 1 break per set perhaps. Andy did better than that but hope he gives a lot more in his next match.
Did anyone hear that chat about hawkeye from the commentators? They were arguing that Granollers shouldnt be able to call on hawkeye because he had tried to play the shot and it had hit the net. They said it was like getting a second chance.
I really dont get this argument, surely if its out then its out, the advantage should be with the player who didnt hit it out!
The rules are that you can't play the point on and then later make a claim, but it is accepted that you can play the shot where the ball is in question ( i.e. often you're in the middle of it anyway ! ) so he was perfectly within his rights, the commentators were wrong. It's maybe the way he clearly had a think first Andy did the same later, hit a shot into the net then went to Hawkeye and they said nothing.
Re the match, fairly routine win. Andy lost focus at times for quite a few points in a row, which would be very dangerous if a service game against a top player. But he did step it up quite impressively at times and particularly went for more in the final set, and as the commentators said when he wants he can hit it just about as hard as anyone.
I think ( and hope ) in tighter matches against better players he is less likely to lose focus. Also at times against lower ranked players he sonetimes seems to almost have too much time, and you can almost see him thinking which of my many brilliant shots should I play here. The answer sometimes was well let's just try this one out ( almost as a practice ). I think Andy is at his best being instinctive and reactive, which was shown at times in this match, and again will likely happen more against higher ranked players.
So, in general, job done, a bit lower gear, but the final set pretty encouraging.
Going to a very late night for him, and with Saturday's Melzer match quite likely to be on earlier ( even possibly first match ) , I hope Andy's clock doesn't get too out of synch and he's ready to go, since Melzer will be a notch up.
I thought it was never going to start (though I have to admit I enjoyed the ladies' match before it, unusually for me!) As soon as it finished I had to dash off to make a belated lunch. I don't know how they know but the commentators were saying his next match will be an afternoon one, middle of the night here. If they are right I'll have to record it and watch it afterwards, I can't hack staying up through the night any more.
The commentators were just surmising a bit that Rafa and Andy willl take turns as the night match on RLA, so they are kind of thinking it will be Rafa' turn.
But I think it's just their intuition ( and why I said Andy's next match likely to be on earlier ) so don't count on it
