RE: Boys & Girls: Yucatan World Cup (G1) - Merida, Mexico

Well done Heather, now making considerable strides in junior events, and a good opportunity to reach her first Grade 1 final. A solid week for Hannah as well, consolidating her newish top 100 ranking to virtually ensure entry to the Australian Open if she wants it (the cut there is usually just outside 100).

It as played Saturday evening (early hours of this morning GMT) and ......

Final
Heather WATSON (GBR) (5) defeated Ana BOGDAN (ROU) (1) 3-6 7-5 6-2 winner.gif

A fantastic tournament, continuing her strong run in junior events (gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games and part of the team in the final of the Junior Fed Cup) and culminating with I imagine her finest win in Juniors against a top ten player. Unfortunately Tara couldn't make it a double celebration.

Doubles Final:

BURDETTE (USA) / TOMLJANOVIC (CRO) (2) defeated  MOORE (GBR) / PALIIVETS (CAN) (5)  6-3 6-4

Massive Congratulations to Heather.

Anyone seen her play? - if so any, albeit tentative, guess as to her potential in the senior game?

Brilliant news!

Great tournament for Heather, and a good scalp.

Junior Slams and a few 10Ks next year I guess.

Great result for Heather. Together with the doubles, that should lift her to somewhere in the low 30's in the ITF rankings and #2 in GB.

Hopefully, things will go better for Tara next week on "home" turf.

I've seen her play once, and she seemed to have very sound groundstrokes, as you would expect from a player who has spent several years at the Bolletieri Academy, but I would not like to judge her potential  in the senior game as I've seen in the past good juniors like Hannah Collin fail to make an impact at senior level.   According to a Guernsey paper Heather postponed her senior debut in a Mexican 25K at Puebla which overlapped in order to play this tournament, but will be playing senior events next year, and we should learn a lot more about her prospects then.

I think if my calculations are correct Heather will move up to around 35 after these points goes on :)

I saw some of heather playin doubles in junior wimbledon. All i noted was good groundies, being at Bollies you;d expect she hits the ball pretty hard. She's quite tall and thin, or looks that anyway.

I'm hoping in 2009 she can make a big break in the senior game aswell as the bigger junior events.

I briefly saw Heather playing in the Wimbledon juniors but not for long enough to gauge her game. One thing I do remember is that she does look very baby-faced - if I didn't know better I would have guessed she was younger than Robson.

Moves up to 34. There are 5 1990 still ranked above her.

Laura Robson down to 7 for now.

Hannah James up to 88.
